Is there a way to get rolling posts on the front page?

    Hi there,

I’m hoping to get rolling posts under the main navigation bar as opposed to just having them static on the front page (as a sidebar which I currently have).
Is this something wordpress gives you the option to do?

    thanks in advance

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi there. Go to Settings ->Reading in the dashboard. You’ll see the very first option is for your front page. At the moment you have a static page selected as front page. Switch that to Your latest posts and save the settings. https://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/front-page/

You might want to edit the existing front page to have a different title than Home, otherwise you’ll have two home links on your menu.

    hi kokkieh,

thanks for replying and for your help…I’ve made changes of changing over to ‘latest posts’ (which can be seen on the home page now).
however, I was hoping to keep the original home page (which has now been renamed ‘Dawah in Islam’) and have the latest posts information moving below the navigation bar (similar to common news sites which feature breaking news). Is this possible to do at all?

hope that makes sense. thanks a lot for your help.

Do you mean a horizontal scrolling ticker tape? I don’t know of any theme with that feature and we can’t add it via plugins on WordPress.com, so I don’t think it’s possible. The closest you can get is the Recent Posts widget which will display a static list of your most recent posts in your sidebar. I see you already have that on your site.

An option you could consider is to copy the content of your Dawah in Islam page into a post instead. Then you set that post as sticky. That way that post will always appear at the top, and the rest of your posts underneath it with the most recent at the top.

yes I think that is what its called. I assumed this can only be done via a plugin. Never mind…I will try probably set the Dawah in Islam page as a post as you suggested to help get me around this.

Thanks very much for your help though, much appreciated.

  • If you really want that feature I suggest you look into the self-hosted option using WordPress.org. There you’d be able to install the necessary plugin to add a ticker tape to your site. hi timethief,

thanks for your help…i’m a little stuck with how/where to put my scrolling message for the blog (referring to the first link you’ve posted).
Would you be able to kindly direct me further on this?
(apologies, im not very good at this).

    thanks again

You’ll need to paste the code for the widget you want into a text widget on your sidebar. Or you can paste it in a new post and set that post as sticky so it will always appear at the top. Keep in mind that in the second case it will only be visible on your home page. If you use it in a text widget it will show anywhere on your site that has the sidebar enabled.

Keep in mind that you’ll need to update these manually every time you want the information to change. It won’t, for example, automatically add new posts to the scrolling message.

I also noticed that both Chrome and Firefox automatically blocked these messages from displaying, both on the blog @timethief linked to, and when I tried those widgets out on my test blog. I assume it’s because our blogs use an https connection, and those widgets all use http connections, so the browsers see the widgets as unsecured content. I had to specifically disable the built-in browser protection each time I loaded a new page to allow the message to display. I think it’s safe to assume most of your readers will have the same problem.

As the gigya-shortcode isn’t officially supported on WordPress.com I’m afraid there’s no support doc I can refer you to regarding this issue. I’ll play around with it a bit myself, and I’ll update you here if I manage to figure something out, but meanwhile be aware that while you can use it, chances are most of your users won’t be able to see it as their browsers will block it by default.
