Is there a way to remove old Notifications?

  • Unknown's avatar

Minor-annoyance question: Is there a way to remove old Notifications from the “Bell” dropdown on my Admin page? I have almost 10 years of them piled up, 99% of which I will never need to look at again, LOL

Or, failing that, is there way to change the default Notifications dropdown view from “All” to “Unread”?

Neither function appears in the Notification Settings as an option. Most sites have a function on notifications that allows the user to delete the ones that they no longer need or want to see, but here it appears to be a choice of only ‘unread’ (blue box) or ‘read’ (white box.)

Any way to simply delete unwanted/old Notifications? Thanks! :-)

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Just realized that I failed to specify that I am on a Personal plan and so cannot use plug-ins (because I understand that there is supposedly a plugin that can remove notifications, but obviously that applies to plug-in-enabled plans only.)

Also, I see via Search that this question was asked once before, in 2015; the reply (not from Staff) was “no you can’t” and the topic was closed with a comment that the request for the feature would be passed on to the WP team/staff.

However, since that was 10 years ago, I was wondering if anything has changed in the interim…..

Hi there, no, still not AFAIK.

I really like your idea of setting the Unread tab as the default Notification view, so I’m adding my voice to your request.

It would definitely be logical, and the next best thing to being able to actually delete unwanted ones.

Hopefully this feature request won’t get buried for a decade like the previous one was, LOL

Did you ever read https://wordpress.com/support/notifications/? You can filter out the unread notifications …

@staartmees, of course there are shortcuts, just as there is a selectable tab for “unread”. But neither method makes it the default display, which remains as ALL and contains every notification ever delivered to the user.

The feature request is for a method to select UNREAD as the DEFAULT display, if in fact there will never be an option to actually delete unwanted notifications.

And may I ask that you please not delete tags on topics that you yourself did not create? You deleted the FEATURE REQUEST and MODLOOK tags that were here before you added your comment at 10:36 am today. As the originator of this topic, I am now putting them back (11:28 am). If one of the WP Staff wants to delete tags, that’s their prerogative but with all due respect, it’s not yours.

@thecybisarchive your comment noted. But folks, let’s keep tags relevant only to forum searches. I removed the additional tag.

As far as feature requests go, historically speaking, we’d need a lot more people jumping in on this for it to see any dev time. So will it be another decade? Who knows..

@thecybisarchive I certainly didn’t delete tags, why should I? DUH

  • Feedback noted: I’ve made a request to default to your last open tab. Thanks, folks!
