Is there a way to set up WordPress to be merely a usenet type group?
-
I considered WordPress as a communication portal, like a User Group, for discussions among a prescribed group of people. I don’t want to force subscribers to have to create their own blog site just to be a member of my news group, which then requires them to set (and worry about) notifications, privacy, etc, etc settings in their own profile. Just too intrusive for this purpose. All I want to do is create a site for communicating, establish the prescriber list using email addresses, and expect that subscribers will get emails and be able to comment on posts/pages in WordPress, that’s all.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

No one is forced to have a blog here. Anyone can register a username account only. Registering a blog is optional.
Here subscribers do their own subscribing and control the frequency of receipt of posts from sites they choose to subscribe to (instantly, daily, weekly, never). Some choose “never” because they do not wish to be emailed and only read posts in the WordPress.COM reader.
If subscriber did not control their own subscriptions that would indeed be invasion of privacy because someone else would be acting like BIG Brother or their mommy or daddy or caregiver by managing their adult affairs for them.

What you are describing above is a list serv not a blog.

There is no limitation on the total number of contributors to any blog. If you’d like to invite others to publish posts or help approve comments on your blog, you can invite them to be a Contributor, Editor, or Author. If you want users to receive updates each time you publish new content you can invite them to be a follower/viewer.
See here:
http://en.support.wordpress.com/adding-users/ and here http://en.support.wordpress.com/user-roles/As noted above they need accounts but do not need to register blogs. They will need to click the “Accept Invitation” button in the invitation email. If they are logged into their WordPress.com account, they will be taken directly to your blog. If not, they will be taken to the log-in screen, where they can either log in or create a new user account.
Note that users who create a new WordPress.com account at that point will still need to return to the invitation email and click the “Accept Invitation” button after doing so.
The limit is 10 invitations at any point in time. It’s a spammer prevention limit. So simply wait and then send out 10 more.
