Is There A Way To Show Original Site While Upgrading Theme?
-
Hi!
I’m switching themes soon and was wondering if it’s possible to show what it was like originally while I upgrade my site? The designs are different and it’s going to take me hours to alter the designs based on the new theme (i.e. add widgets, do re-layouting etc.) and all that, and visitors are going to be exposed to a work-in-progress design, which is not really professional.
I appreciate your input.
Thank-you!

Themes are just “skins”. You can quickly and easily change themes to another one found here http://wordpress.com/themes/ and no data will be lost or negatively affected by the change. The only time you may have to do some work is if you are changing to a dramatically different theme and have done any CSS editing.
Provided you are logged in as Admin under the same username account that registered the blog go to Dashboard > Appearance > Themes and browse themes until you find one you like and click “activate” or type in the name of the theme you want to use and
click the “activate” link when it appears. After you change your theme all you need to do is go here Dashboard > Appearance > Widgets > Inactive Widgets and re-install them where you want them to appear. The widget contents and settings will be the same as they were prior to changing themes.
Both features and widget areas do vary from theme to theme so that’s why it’s critical that you use the detailed themed description page for setting up your new theme.
Best wishes.

No that’s not possible. To temporarily change blog visibility to private go to > Settings > Reading scroll to Blog Visibility and choose option 3 . See the guide here http://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/privacy-settings/

You could set up a Private test blog – export some of your current content to it. Then work on the appearance of the test blog – the advantage is that the learning curve will be on the Private blog – you still need to change the original blog theme by hand, but you have a template so to speak to follow so the time should be much shorter
