Is there a way to use some of my blog's 'Tags' to create an 'index'?

I’m using my blog to share my genealogy research and the vast majority of my tags are things like ‘MALES Rochelle Nichole’ and ‘CALLAHAN Tanya Louise’. I would like to be able to create a page (or group of pages) using only those type of tags, in alphabetical order, as a sort of ‘name index’. Is this possible? If so, how would I go about doing this correctly?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • You can use the tag cloud widget available for your WordPress.com site to do this.

To do this, open your WordPress.com dashboard and click on the Customize button. It open the WordPress.com Customizer. Choose Widgets > Add a widget and search for “tag cloud”

Choose “tag cloud” and will be able to show the most-used tags as a cloud. Please don’t confuse “tag cloud” with “category cloud”

You also have the choice to exclude tags that you won’t want to show up on the cloud.

You can read more about it here. https://en.support.wordpress.com/widgets/tag-cloud-widget/

I hope this helps. Feel free to get back if you have questions and I will be keen on helping you through it!

  • To clarify, you will be able to add tag clouds as widgets on your WordPress.com site. You cannot do standalone pages to have tag clouds.

“Widget is a fancy word for tools or content that you can add, arrange, and remove from the sidebar(s) of your website or blog. Widgets make it easy to customize the content of your sidebar(s). If you don’t see your sidebar you may need to add at least one widget. You can learn more about the widgets we offer by checking out the Related links on the right.” You can read more about widgets here. https://en.support.wordpress.com/widgets/

Thank you so much for you help and explanation! I had added the tag cloud but couldn’t get the exclusions to stick. I think I have it figured out now after reviewing (for a second time) the help article you linked (I’m not entirely sure what I messed up the first go-round but it appears to be working great now).

  • No problem! Happy to help.

Glad to hear that your tag cloud is working as expected now!

If your question is resolved, I suggest you to mark this forum topic as resolved. Thanks!

I actually played around with my blog some more this morning after responding to your previous message and I figured out how to do exactly what I was hoping to do!

You CAN make an index page for your site based on your tags. How I did it (and I hope my explanation makes sense):

    1. Create the tags. Make sure they are worded/spelled exactly the way you want them to be. (See NOTE1 below.)

    2. Create a page to use as your site index. I used “Name Index List” for mine, gave it a brief intro and made an alphabetical list of all the tags I wanted to include in the index (mine are names, so I broke them into sections, “A”, “B”, etc. and then listed the tags alphabetically under each letter section).

    3. From the blog (NOT the wp admin screen) click on the first tag you want to link to the index–this can be done from either the tag cloud widget or from any post that tag is used on. This obviously opens into a post listing of everything that tag is used in.

    4. Copy the URL for that tag’s post listing page and then use that URL to “link” to the index (in exactly the same way you would link various posts/websites in a blog post).

    5. Repeat for each tag needed.

    6. Update index page, as new tags are created, using the above steps.

NOTE1: If you need to change the name/spelling of a tag at any time after you’ve included it in the index, you will need to “update” the URL to that tag’s post listing (and if you so choose, the way the name appears in the index). This is because renaming the tag breaks the old URL and creates a new one. To update each tag that has been “renamed”, simply repeat steps one through 4–for step 4 (in the “edit page” screen) you can simply update the pre-existing URL for the tag in question instead of creating a new link.

NOTE2: Using a pre-existing tag from the index listing in a new post does “auto-update” the tag’s post listing page. Therefore, once a tag is included in the index you won’t need to update the URL for that tag each time it is used in a new post. You only need to do this if you “break” the original URL by renaming the tag.

I’ll be sure to mark this resolved (now that I realize I should). Thank you again!
