Hi there,
Is there an easy way to reduce the overall volume of spam?
If a lot of the spam comments you get have a common string of text, I suggest adding that string to your comment blacklist. That way, those comments will be automatically marked as spam instead of held in your pending comments queue.
When you edit your blacklist, you can use the comment author’s name, IP address, web site, as well as the comment itself. Please make sure the word is not something contained in non-spam comments. For example, if you enter “press” as a blacklisted word, “WordPress” will match.
Also, please mark those comments as spam instead of just deleting. Our Akismet anti-spam engine tries to learn from a pattern of the comments that are marked as spam. We have more information about dealing with spam or unwanted comments here:
Unwanted Comments and Comment SpamPlease let me know if you have any other questions about that. :)

Thank you for your prompt reply. Recently my comments blacklist has been overwhelmed with spam. On occasion comments which should not be blacklisted appear in that list, which means it’s essential to scroll through what has become hundreds of items daily to ensure legitimate items are not consigned to oblivion. My question concerns whether or not it is possible to target specific generators, as the recent deluge is confined to a limited number of sources. Can they be completely sidetracked away from my site?

Hi there,
We use the Akismet filter and your comments blacklist to do our best to send spam to the spam queue and get your legitimate comments into your pending queue. Every time you mark a spam comments as spam or unspam a legitimate comment, it helps Akismet learn and do a better job filtering comments in the future. However, there isn’t a way to completely prevent spam comments on your blog from showing up in one of your comment queues.
If you find that you’re getting a lot of spam comments on older posts, you might want to consider automatically closing comments on your posts after a certain period of time. Usually, legitimate comments are focused on your newest posts, so closing comments on older posts may reduce the amount of spam you’re getting. You can do that under Settings > Discussion in your dashboard, by checking the box next to “Automatically close comments on articles older than # days.” (You can choose the number of days you’d like to enter there.)
I hope this helps!
