Blogs are interactive website structures.
Websites are one way communication noticeboards.A blog is a website. This is all semantics and blog structure. A blog is a post based website designed for interactive communication. As the posts are frequently updated and appear on the front page of the site it’s very attractive to search engines.
What most people call a website is merely a page based site that functions as a one way noticeboard. As the structure is page based and as pages are for static content that rarely changes, and as pages do not have RSS feeds it is not as attractive to search engines as a post based blog structured site is.
Any WordPress blog can be restructured from being post based to being page based – no upgrade required. For greater clarity read > http://en.support.wordpress.com/using-wordpress-to-create-a-website/ and http://onecoolsitebloggingtips.com/2013/07/25/create-a-wordpress-website-step-by-step/
We frequently get people here who think they can design their own sites and themes. This is not possible here at WordPress.COM but it is possible if you hire a web host and set up a WordPress.ORG install.
The only themes we can use on free hosted WordPress.com blogs are found here http://wordpress.com/themes/ There is no FTP access to free hosted WordPress.com blogs for security reasons and we cannot:
upload any third party themes,
create child themes,
create our own themes,
edit templates,
create own own layouts,
or use stylesheets from other themes.http://en.support.wordpress.com/ftp-access/
http://en.support.wordpress.com/themes/adding-new-themes/There is no upgrade you can purchase that changes that.
On one hand, none of the characteristic “blog” features like categories, tags, authors, dates, etc. can be removed from a free hosted WordPress.com blog, without purchasing an annually renewable custom design upgrade and doing the required CSS editing.

need more interaction with my audience.
Well, truth be told we all do. The minute after like buttons and share buttons were implemented comments were reduced. That’s because it’s easier to click buttons that to actually compose some meaningful feedback and humans get hooked on the quick and easy ways to do things. That said, some bloggers are still into reciprocity so the questions really become (1) how many comments do you leave yourself? And (2) how many other blogger’s blogs do your promote via social media? The challenge is to increase the numbers.
Two ways of attracting like-minded subscribers are
(1) commenting meaningfully and frequently on blogs with similar content

and
(2) being active on social networking sites

http://dailypost.wordpress.com/postaday/ebook-grow-traffic/If you want to increase traffic then don’t listen to anyone who professes there are passive ways of doing that. Increasing traffic to a blog is hard work. If you want your blog to rank well in search engine results then that begins with creating and publishing original content posts (not pages) ie. unique content that cannot be found anywhere else on the internet.

These 5 videos introduce how Google discovers, crawls, indexes your site’s pages, and how Google displays them in search results. It also touches lightly upon challenges webmasters and search engines face, such as duplicate content http://onecoolsitebloggingtips.com/2010/03/22/5google-webmasters-video-tutorials/
If you are using a WordPress.com theme good SEO is a given. However, going beyond the theme what the blogger has done within that structure is worth evaluating. Whether you write informative, persuasive or controversial content learning how search engines work, and how to apply basic SEO to you content will benefit your blog as it will increase traffic from targeted readers. http://onecoolsitebloggingtips.com/2011/10/21/two-seo-videos-for-bloggers/
