Links on blog page stopped working
-
I have a technical issue: Links in my blog have stopped working (they are not clickable any more in http://foreignbuyers.wordpress.com/blog/ )
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

In general, when you do not have any upgrade plan on your site, the question you submit at https://wordpress.com/help/contact is routed to the community forums where it may be answered by forum volunteers or tagged for Staff assistance.
This thread is tagged for Staff, but looking at your 2 recent blog posts, they both have an Amazon affiliate link and I do understand that this is your own ebook you are promoting.
Also, the dead link issue only happens when on the front Posts page at https://foreignbuyers.wordpress.com/blog/ , but not in the archives pages, for example for February at https://foreignbuyers.wordpress.com/2017/02/ so perhaps there is a configuration or other issue here.
Please be patient for Staff to reply.

Hi foreignbuyers,
Let’s see if we can work out what is happening. I’ve been doing some investigating and have discovered the following:
1. If I go to your posts page, none of the links are clickable:
https://foreignbuyers.wordpress.com/blog/
2. If I visit a single post the links are clickable:
How to Choose between Passive and Active Marketing to Foreign Buyers
3. The issue with the links is only happening in the blog
Can you confirm you are experiencing the same problem? And how long ago did the issue start?
Let me know and we’ll go from there.
Thanks!

to gemmacevans:
1. yes (and it concerns not only my own created links, but also ‘comment’ and ‘edit’ and the titles to go to a single post from the blog page are not clickable!)
2. yes
3. I noticed the issue just several days ago

thnks!
p.s. on the main blog page not only the links that I’ve created are not clickable, but also ‘comment’ and ‘edit’ and the title – I mean those that belong to the scheme itself… -
@foreignbuyers – You’re welcome. I encountered the same issue on the blog front page. All links are unclickable, including post titles, comments and other built in theme links (in addition to any links you have added).

thnks!
I also have tried not from mine, but from a different comp and see the same as you…
will be waiting for the staff to find the way to resolve the issue… -
Hi,
Thanks for confirming. I’ll take a look at what is happening and come back to you when I have an update.
Speak soon.

Hi again,
I’ve had a look through the affected posts and there are lots of empty <div> and open <p> HTML tags:
https://cloudup.com/c4N8bfrsVGt
Empty or unclosed HTML tags can disrupt other elements on the page — including links.
Are you pasting the content into the editor from another source, such as a Word document? When you add content to your post do you use the Visual or HTML tab on the editor?

to gemmacevans:
thnks for looking at the issue
I doubt thou that it’s the reason…plz have a look at the today’s latest post (thru BLOG)
where I deleted ALL <div></div><p>
but it doesn’t affect any links…at the same time without these tags
there are no paragraphs in the text…yes, I always past the text from Notepad in Visual
then Preview
then go to HTML to create paragraphsand in the past all the links in my text and your theme worked with that,
but some short time ago they stopped! -
Hi there,
plz have a look at the today’s latest post (thru BLOG)
where I deleted ALL <div></div><p>
but it doesn’t affect any links…Unclosed HTML tags on any of the posts could have an affect on the overall page — especially as the full post is displayed for every post on your Blog page. Unclosed tags create invalid HTML — which prevents browsers from interpreting the code correctly and can break certain elements on the page.
One thing I did spot was an unclosed tag in the code for ‘Cross-Cultural Selling Real Estate to Foreign Buyers on Amazon’.
I ran this problem past our developers and they also think the unclosed tags could be the issue. It would be a good idea to remove any empty or unclosed tags and see if that helps.
at the same time without these tags
there are no paragraphs in the text…The editor will auto paragraph text even in the HTML tab, so there is no need to add paragraph tags yourself. However, if you did write a post with paragraph tags, the editor would recognise that you had added them — and wouldn’t add more.
Let me know how you get on!
-
ok, I’ll delete the existing breaks and put
instead in ALL old postsalthou once again: the dead links is a NEW issue (probably after some changes on WP?), in the past the links worked properly!
btw: the code <div></div> has been auto included by the site editor, BUT never makes paragraphs, that’s why I had to add <p> (which doesn’t really require any closing code according to the most online manuals, right?)
anyway, I’ll let you know the result
thnks! -
to gemmacevans again:
done:
all <div></div><p> are replaced by
in ALL posts on the main blog page http://foreignbuyers.wordpress.com/blog/
including ‘cross cultural selling’the results as expected:
all links are dead as before – down to the ‘older posts’ tab,
but the first older post ‘cross cultural selling’ is clickable as it was…also: if ‘bad codes’ in my texts on the main blog page affect the links of the whole page (including the theme itself!), but at the same time ANY separate post with the same coding works just fine (links are clickable)?
so:
as it seems the suspected reason was not the one, what do we do next?
thnks! -
Staff will assist you with this.
(FWIW-I still tend to believe there is a misconfiguration somewhere on that blog page because there shouldn’t be any posts showing below the “Older Posts” button on your blog page, but there currently is. Unfortunately, I do not know how to correct that.)

to justjennifer:
thnks!
will be waiting…
if the staff can’t find the reason, then I’d like to hear about that eventually – to try and apply a different theme maybe? (a blog without links is useless…)
and I’d like to hear a recommendation then: which theme – without such inner problems – may I use? something about ‘office’ or ‘real estate’ – nothing too fancy… thnks -
Hi @foreignbuyers, the problem isn’t so much empty tags as it is one of unmatched tags. If you open a div, you need to close it. If you open a paragraph, or a link, or anything else, you need to close it. And if you close something, you need to have a corresponding opening earlier in the code.
I found this in one of your posts:
<div> Happy blog reading, Olga Kellen, <a href="http://www.amazon.com/author/olgakellen" target="_blank">The Amazon Author</a> <a href="http://www.english-and-russian.com/" target="_blank">International Marketing Consultant and English-Russian Translator</a></div> <br> <div>Copyright © 2017 by Olga Kellen All Rights Reserved</div> </div>I removed that extra closing div tag at the end, and your blog page works again. :) These can be tricky to find, by the way, so next time you see this you’ll want to check on it right away, since it’ll most likely be in your most recent post. This one was in an older post and it took me a while to find it.
