Is there any way I can change my theme without having to go through every post to edit its formattin

    Hello,

I’ve had my blog for a long time. I really want to change my theme but I am afraid my formatting will go crazy. I am terrified to change my theme because I have about 500 posts and I can’t go through each and every one to make sure they look okay. What would you recommend me doing. Alternatively, do you offer a tool where I can build my own theme?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi there. First, there’s no way to build your own theme on WordPress.com. We can only use the themes that already exist: http://en.support.wordpress.com/themes/adding-new-themes/

If you apply a new theme it automatically changes the formatting of all your posts to match the new theme. In most cases this shouldn’t mess up your posts, though if the new theme has a wider or narrower content area it might throw off your text wrapping around images. Another potential problem is if you used inline CSS to style your posts – your changes might not mesh well with the new theme.

But I’m afraid there’s no way to tell exactly what might happen, and the only way you’ll be able to see if something is off is by viewing the specific post.

The best advice I can give is to register a new, private test blog. Import some of your posts to that blog and see how your content look with the new theme. It’s not completely foolproof, but it will give you a good idea, I think.

And if one or two posts get messed up, if you notice it, fix it. Luckily blogs tend to have the highest traffic on newer posts, so I wouldn’t worry too much about a couple older posts misbehaving. I know it’s not the answer you want, but it’s the best I have to offer.
