You can return to the original, simpler writing experience—often called the Classic Editor—which functions more like a traditional word processor rather than the modern “Blocks” system. On WordPress.com, the easiest way to access this is by navigating to your Posts list, clicking the three dots (⋮) next to a post title, and selecting “Classic Editor” from the menu. If you are using a self-hosted version of WordPress, you can permanently revert to the old interface by installing the official Classic Editor plugin from the Plugins → Add New menu, which is maintained specifically for those who prefer the familiar legacy layout. Alternatively, if you only need the old toolbar occasionally, you can click the (+) button within the new editor and search for the “Classic Block,” which inserts a text box featuring the original formatting buttons exactly as they appeared in previous versions.

Hi there!
When you mention the “original simpler version,” do you mean the Classic Editor? If yes, you can still use the Classic Editor on your current site. Here are two guides that should help:- Classic Editor Guide — how to use the Classic Editor on WordPress.com
- Classic Block — if you’d like to use the classic editing toolbar within the block editor itself
Let us know if either of those helps or if you have any follow-up questions!
