Is there something very wrong with google calendar embeds?

The first time you view a page with a google calendar embed on an ipad, iPhone, or itouch, all is well. However, if you refresh the page or even close it and go back later – the fields in the Google Calendar embed continually grow (downward). It happens even with the sample embed on the wordpress.com support page here: http://en.support.wordpress.com/google-calendar/. Please test it out. I have not been able to find any documentation that this is a known issue in wordpress or with google calendar embeds in general.

I have now verified that this happens on iPad, and iPhone regardless of the browser used. Also, it seems to ONLY be an issue in wordpress.com.

    Hi there,

Thanks for the report on this. On my side, this is only happening in Safari on both the iPhone and iPad. It is not happening in Chrome. Are you experiencing it in multiple browsers?

  • Unknown's avatar

Yes, I am also experiencing it in Chrome on both ipad and iPhone after a refresh, and then give it a minute. The first time I saw it happen I thought someone spiked the punch.

I’m now experiencing the issue in Chrome as well. Thanks for the report. I’ve passed this along to our developers, and I’ll let you know as soon as a fix is in place!

    Thanks Jeremey!

Not a problem! I’ll keep you posted on a solution.

    Hi Jeremy, any news?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi!

Sorry about the delay. No news yet! I’ll let you know as soon as there are any more developments.

Hi Jeremy, sorry to keep bugging you, but as the google calendar is new to our site, students are visiting and having trouble using it because of the stretching that continually moves everything around. I’ve moved the subscription link to the top, but we’d really like to get this resolved. I’ve tried pitting it inside another div and adding some CSS to the containing div, but that doesn’t help. Any thoughts or progress on your end?
    Thanks!

    Hi!

We’ve reported the issue to Google and are currently waiting for their response. You can read our report here:

    https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!category-topic/calendar/report-an-issue/calendar-not-loading/safari/ios/6l0i1i7BqYI

Unfortunately, it’s not something we can fix on our side. The fix will need to come from Google so we’re limited until we hear back from them. I really apologize for the delay!

Hi Jeremy – I’m not convinced this is a Google issue. I’ve done some searching and it is ONLY an issue in wordpress.com. It doesn’t happen in calendars embedded on sites using wordpress.org software or any others. It appears to be specific to wordpress.com, perhaps an issue with the shortcode in which the iframe can’t find a height and therefore continues to grow.

The Google report also only mentions Safari, but it happens in any browser on ios. It would be great if the developers at wordpress.com could take a look at the shortcode and determine if there’s a problem there. Google isn’t going to pay much attention if it’s only an issue on wordpress.com and few WP.com users are utilizing the shortcode.

    Thanks again.

    Hi,

Our developers confirmed that this is happening on pages created outside of WordPress.com as well when using the Google shortcode so it appears to be an issue with Google, not just with WordPress.com. I confirmed on a self-hosted WordPress.org site on my side and a Tumblr site. Unfortunately, there isn’t anything we can do to fix this at the moment.

Thanks for double and triple checking on this for me Jeremy! It’s too bad Google doesn’t have Happiness Engineers. I won’t hold my breath waiting for a Google fix, so I may go ahead and switch to the upcoming events shortcode in the meantime. I really wish there was an option to put the date column first in upcoming events though…

    Thanks for all your help!

    Hi!

I’m sorry – it isn’t possible to flip the order of the Upcoming Events table. The location will be the first column to show up. I apologize that I can’t help more with the Google Calendar embed! I’m hoping it will be cleared up soon as well.
