Is there still such a thing as a free wordpress blog
-
I would like to set up a free wordpress blog for my sister, but it seems that i have to choose a plan, i don’t seem to have an option to select a free one?
is that correct?or how do i set up a free one?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

i’ve had to go in and change an old free wordpress blog which is no longer used, so i guess i have a work around but i’d still love to know if you can set up a free one or not?
-
Yes, of course. https://wordpress.com/pricing/ click the “Start with Free” button.
Let us know if you have any other question about this.
-
Ahhh, thank you.
i can see that now i’ve clicked your link, but i couldn’t see that before, when i was within ‘my sites’ i clicked on the add a new site and i only had the option of ‘create a shiny new wordpress’ or ‘add an existing wordpress to jetpack’, then when i clicked on ‘new site’, i had to enter a domain name which cost money.how do i find that page, through the main site?
-
The link provided by @justjennifer saying “start with free” still leads to the exact same place you were at with “Shiny new site” and “continue”. I’d take a few moments to experiment with addresses in the search box though. The default free site offered these days usually has far too many numbers.

Through the Calypso dashboard? Let me sign out and check from a different account. The one I’m posting from has been around long enough that it may not behave like a newer account. I’ll get back to you soon-ish.

Hello again, Yes. Clicking the “Add New Site” link at the very bottom of the Calypso dashboard sidebar leads to “Create a Shiny New Site” and clicking the “Start Now” button takes you through the same steps as clicking the “Start with Free” button on the pricing page.
I’d agree wholeheartedly with @themagicrobot that when you get to the “Give your site an address” step that you play around with names. The free option is usually just below the upgrades with paid domains.
The WordPressdotcom GO blog https://wordpress.com/go/ has been running a hot streak on naming domains, so if you need some inspiration:

hmmm, i just tried it and i still only get the option to pay, not free.
i have a couple of sites so not sure if this is the reason.
i did screen grabs, but i don’t have the option to upload an image.basically, i click on your link and i get four options, ‘free £0, personal £36, premium £84 & business £240′
then i click on free and it takes me to the page where you choose your name and it offers me mychoice.blog or mychoice.org, .net etc…w hich some are included in your plan.
then i click on one of the free choices, and it then takes me to a page, where i have to choose Personal £3/month, Premium £7/month or business £20/monthno free choice.
now a i’ve said i manged to change the name of an existing site that i wasnt’ using, but i’d love to know what is going wrong for me and why i can’t open up a new FREE blog on wordpress.
yours confused.

ahhh, on the next page, on the left it had £36 to pay , and i clicked on the x and it then clicked straight into the dashboard for the new name, so it’s rather confusing, and it seems like it is there to trick you into paying etc… bt i got there in the end.
thanks for the help.

Hello again, This sounds odd. Please do upload those screenshots to your vixbrixham.wordpress.com site’s Media Library and then let me know that you’ve done that and I’ll tag this for Staff to have a look. Thanks.

Hello,
I hope you don’t me adding to the conversation here.
@ charliepw: I think you are choosing the custom domain names which comes with the paid plan like mychoice.blog or mychoice.orgPlease see the screenshot: https://imgur.com/a/idSFHm7
Choose the domain name which has “Free” written in front of it. Your free domain name will have a name like “mychoice1234.wordpress.com”If you choose the free domain, then on the next page you will find the “Free plan ” option.
Please see if you are able to find the free option now.

yashitamittal11, i think you are right, i did indeed click on the best match and not on the free option but to me that wasn’t obvious.
i’ll have to make a mental note to self to do that next time.
thank you
