Is there such a thing as a "spam" follower?
-
Hi there,
This may be no big problem, but recently I’ve been getting what appear to me “spam” followers – i.e. followers whose WordPress pages are empty, non-existent or clearly spam. Some examples are http://themanilaexplorer.wordpress.com, http://nathanlewis7000.wordpress.com, http://balboarvpark.wordpress.com & http://persibvikingcom.wordpress.com. The odd thing is that they don’t appear under Notifications, but they do appear as Followers.
I know it’s hard to tell if these are legitimate blogs or not, but given my history of followers (only a few new ones now and again) it seems odd that I would suddenly be getting so many that feel so unauthentic.
I suppose I’m really wondering if this is something I should be worried about? It doesn’t seem to be doing any harm, but it does seem a little fishy.
Thank you!
Chris

It is possible.
They can’t really do much harm, unless you consider reading your blog to be harmful. :)
Pretty much the only thing they’d have to gain is getting you to visit or follow their blog through the notification email.
If they have an empty blog, it’s probably still legitimate, they just want to use the Reader or subscribe to your blog via email, but don’t want to blog themselves.
If it’s spam content, please report it following this guide: http://en.support.wordpress.com/report-blogs/

Thanks, macmanx.
That’s pretty much what I was thinking, but I’m still relatively inexperienced to blogging and just wanted to be sure. I’ve seen the option to report blogs before, so I’ll definitely keep an eye out for that if I notice anything.
Otherwise I guess you’re right – I can’t argue with extra followers!
