Is this legal? Using free version wordpress.com and using custom domain

  Hi all,

  I will appreciate if you can help me as support seems to be closed till 26 due to staff holiday.

  As far as i know, i can use for free wordpress with the wordpress.com sub-domain eg saaabiiirr.wordpress.com

  But if i want to use my own custom domain or map it, i will require paid plans in order to do this.

  I have a colleague who is making a free wordpress.com website and using url redirect to cover the subdomain of wordpress.com and redirect to purchased domain.

  Eg Person owns http://www.abc.com that is bought from elsewhere

  He opens a free website eg www. abc.wordpress.com

  Then he uses URL redirect so anyone typing in http://www.abc.com will be redirected to http://www.abc.wordpress.com while having the free subdomain masked. So the front end user will never know he has landed on http://www.abc.wordpress.com as his address bar wil show http://www.abc.com

  As far as i know, that is not legal as one requires to have a paid plan to have domain mapping in place

  Please can anyone clarify.

  Hi there,

  I have very little knowledge surrounding domains, but will do my best to help figure out what you’re asking. Good news, you’re helping me learn some more. ;)

  I am assuming that saaabiiirr.wordpress.com is your account/site. If you haven’t paid for a plan, then that is your free account.

  Domains can now only be added as part of a plan, so you would have to have the Premium or Business plan. It doesn’t matter whether the domain was bought somewhere else, or whether you want to buy it here. However, accounts that already own a domain can buy additional domains, but new accounts cannot buy or map a domain independent of a plan.
