No – it is an option if you want to use it – it is WordPress.COM trying to give people defense against email passwords being compromised and damage being done to your blog

Well, I’m glad because having to deal with getting a new password every time one wishes to access one’s blog would be terribly onerous. Or am I not interpreting this correctly?

Depends on how secure you want to make your blog – we see people almost every day that had their blog damaged or deleted because someone got into their email account – this is one way to fight back
