Is this the method for additonal non-WP.com domains to point to primary domain?

  • Unknown's avatar

    I have a primary domain which is the business name mapped to my wp.com name.. However, I would like to obtain two more generic domains which comprise my town and my trade (e.g. mytownplumber.com.au) and 301 redirect those to my primary domain. Given WP.com does not handle .com.au domains, I propose the following;

    1. establish two inactive blogs in my account.
    2. point each new .com.au domain to one of the inactive blogs.
    3. Upgrade each blog to map one of the .com.au domains
    4. Upgrade each blog to Site Redirect
    5. Redirect both those .com.au domains from the inactive blogs to the primary blog.

    Will that work? If so will that redirect be a 301 type redirect so I get maximum Google brownie points?

    Thanks, Kenny

  • Hi Kenny,

    Actually, it is a lot simpler than that.

    1. Purchase the new .com.au domains at your registrar of choice
    2. Point them to our nameservers (ns1.wordpress.com ns2.wordpress.com ns3.wordpress.com)
    3. Visit your primary site’s Store->Domains page in the dashboard (direct link: https://rsldaylesford.wordpress.com/wp-admin/paid-upgrades.php?page=domains )
    4. Add the new domains, one-by-one, via that page.

    All three domains can be active on the site at one time and when anyone visits mytownplumber.com.au they would be redirected to diggersbistro.com.au.

    The redirects are SEO friendly as they would maintain one single canonical set of URLs.

    Please let me know if you have any questions or need anything else. Cheers!
