Is WordPress appropriate for my goals?

  • Unknown's avatar

I am having a very difficult time just finding out if wordpress is even appropriate for my website. I want a presentational (not a blog style) website. Is WordPress appropriate for me or not? WordPress was recommended to me by two separate entities and I now have two separate websites running on wordpress. I have wasted endless hours trying to even make sense of wordpress and what is and is not possible on wordpress. I would be very willing to upgrade but it I can’t even figure out if wordpress has anything appropriate for my goals and customer service is hard or actually impossible to access. I don’t know if I can work with a site that I can’t easily contact. What is your advice? Thank you.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

We have already read that and don’t know what you mean. We do know what is possible on a free hosted WordPress.COM blog and on a self-hosted WordPress.ORG install and I posted the link to the differences between the two above.

Regardless of the theme one chooses, a WordPress.com blog can be structured either as a post based blog or as a page based website.

Strictly speaking a blog is a website but let’s differentiate.

    5 Blog and Website Differences
    (1) The main difference between a blog and website is the communication style. A website has a noticeboard communication style. A blog is a website designed for interactive communication. Collectively blogs create the blogosphere, while websites are like standalone islands.

    (2) Blogs encourage conversation, websites do not and that’s why businesses with websites are adding blogs, and sometimes forums and wikis to them for complaint handling, customer feedback purposes and for collaborative purposes.

    (3) Blogs feature dynamic content and position it front and center. The entries have date and time stamps, and blog entries are customarily displayed on the front page in reverse chronological order. Most most websites do not have dynamic content on their front pages. Many websites have static front pages. The information most websites provide is static, rarely updated, and the sites are often poorly maintained.

    (4) Blogs have RSS feeds, websites ALONE do not.

    (5) Usually but not always, blogs rank higher in Google and as “freshness” is extremely important when it comes to content appearing in the SERPs (search engine page results).

    Here’s a link to a custom menu walk-through > http://onecoolsitebloggingtips.com/2011/08/11/wordpress-com-custom-menu-walk-through/

There are many common errors, misunderstanding and misconceptions when creating custom menus and you can read about them here > http://wpbtips.wordpress.com/2011/12/19/custom-menus/

On one hand, none of the characteristic “blog” features like categories, tags, authors, dates, etc. can be removed from a free hosted WordPress.com blog without purchasing an annually renewable custom design upgrade and doing the required CSS editing.

On that other hand, one can edit a WordPress.org theme free of charge. That’s why I suggested you read this comparison > WordPress.com and WordPress.org: The Differences http://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

    Ok WordPress, Wherever You Are…

    I’m DONE!!

    BYE WordPress!!!

p.s. If you ever decide to be more customer friendly ie: provide any company contact I may revisit your company but after a year of no luck and no support it’s unlikely that i’ll actually make the effort.

For starters what are some very specific things you want your blog to do or look like? Many themes and many options – your blog does not need to look like a traditional blog if you want – but without specific needs spelled out nobody can even start to help you

    @auxclass

I want a presentational (not a blog style) website.

    That has been answered above.

My advice is to read the link TT gave you above. We can’t say if it’s appropriate to your goals as we haven’t the faintest idea what your goals are.

  • Unknown's avatar

@TT – not really to me

Will they accept footer navigation & Widgets, does all the navigation need to be with a top nav bar (then we need custom menus for them) do they have upcoming events, want to note past events – so Posts would be used at some point – OK maybe full width front page – but Pages or Posts (or describe the type of info) – need specific background color or images??

to me a “presentation” site is one with just a big PowerPoint on the front page and that is all –

Huh, look at all the help this person got before flouncing away, complaining there was no help here.

    Hi again,
    Okay I’ll accept that definition.
