Is WordPress hosting my domain?

  • Unknown's avatar

My domain is currently hosted by WordPress, I’m half way through the trial period for premium service. Having trouble getting help setting it up properly.

I canceled GoDaddy hosting on domain wehearyou.net because we could not resolve glitches with how the WordPress designed site displayed (mainly broken links on animated gifs). Began 14 day trial hosting on WordPress on 4/6. It’s been hard so far to get email support when hosting problems come up as I set up the new site. Though siohyb has been great on certain issues about how individual pages displayed.

After following mapping instructions as best I could, it took a few days to finally get the site https://animationtestsite.wordpress.com/ to display as domain name https://wehearyou.net. This took about 75 hours in limbo and a trip to GoDaddy to change Domain Detail settings to forward the domain name and mask the wordpress URL with our domain name.

The wordpress site then finally displayed as wehearyou.net, a big improvement, but not the full change over to WordPress hosting.

Since I am unable to forward link to individual pages (link URL always shows up as domain name), I tried again just now to map wordpress site above to domain name. Went through the steps again and got the message:

Sorry but wehearyou.net is already mapped to a WordPress.com blog.

Now URL again displays as https://animationtestsite.wordpress.com/ when I type in wehearyou.net. Back where I started a week ago…. went back to GoDaddy domain manager and changed settings again to mask URL, so now the WordPress URL is again masked when someone clicks wehearyou.net link.

Part of WordPress hosting is supposed to be email support. Today on support page I read that email support is down until 4/20.

Very frustrating experience, so far, trying to solve hosting problems. Searching a user forum for answers isn’t really a substitute for being able to reach a person who can tell you have to resolve an issue. I’m directed here for 24/7 support…

    Please advise,
    Eliot
long-time and otherwise happy WordPress user

Part of WordPress hosting is supposed to be email support. Today on support page I read that email support is down until 4/20.

I see exactly what you refer to at the support link:

If you have a paid upgrade, please use the “Contact Support” form, where you will receive a choice of having staff answer your question publicly or privately. https://en.support.wordpress.com/contact/

    opînion
I think this closing of the support link has to stop. It amounts to false advertising. More Support Staff ought to be hired because any outfit that is in this business has to provide support to all bloggers they host 24/7 to have any credibility.

I tagged this thread for Staff assistance. Please subscribe to it so you are notified when they respond. To subscribe look in the sidebar of this thread, find the subscribe to topics link and click it.

Know that forwarding and masking is not stable and secure and that is why it is NOT supported. The correct way to do this is by mapping an existing domain.

WordPress.com does not accept domain transfers but mapping an existing domain is possible. Domain mapping of an existing domain URL that you already own and purchased elsewhere is not done free of charge. You will have to renew the domain name purchase where you made it and the domain mapping purchase here every year.

Mapping an existing domain costs $13. annually and a domain name purchase and domain mapping are included in the Premium ujpgrade bundle.

In order to map to a domain one must have an underlying .wordpress.com subdomain blog to map from and it does not matter what that underlying .wordpress.com URL is. It does not have to match the domain URL.

If you have registered a .wordpress.com blog you log in as Admin under the exact same username account that registered the blog and as you own that domain already you can see here for mapping an existing domain that you already own http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/

It can take between 24 – 72 hours for domain name propagation to take place throughout the internet. You can view the DNS changes here > http://www.whatsmydns.net/ What’s important during that stage is to be patient.

Thanks for this partially helpful reply, timethief. Appreciated the comment about 24/7 support as false advertising.

I purchased the Premium upgrade bundle, as I wrote, but so far, not much help– outside of the workaround i was able to come up with to get my website back up and running under the purchased domain name.

I have to say, though it’s possible I may not have expressed myself clearly enough, it I seems like your answer did not address my precise question. I was not able to properly map domain the first time (thus workaround on domain seller end after 75 hours) and the second time I tried, just now, I got the message

Sorry but wehearyou.net is already mapped to a WordPress.com blog.

which puts me back in the cul du sac I described in my original query.

Also, raincoaster’s reply, also appreciated, did not actually solve the ongoing problem I am still having trying to get support that actually fixes the issue raised.

But I will continue to remain patient and optimistic about the support I was promised when I signed up for the premium upgrade,
    Eliot

The bottom line here is that you (the blogger) does the setup for mapping a domain and if you do not do it correctly then you have to fix it.

    Non-WordPress.com Nameservers

Although wehearyou.net has been registered, it is not using WordPress.com nameservers. If your domain is mapped to a self-hosted site, then your configuration may be fine as currently set up. If you wish to host your site at WordPress.com, you will need to update your nameservers as outlined below.

To learn about how to correctly map an existing domain, please see our documentation. https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/#instructions-for-mapping-an-existing-domain If you’re not sure whether you own this domain or not, the WHOIS database record may help you out. https://www.whois.net/default.aspx

    Non-WordPress.com Nameservers
We require that your name server configuration include only the following servers or their numeric equivalents:

    NS1.WORDPRESS.COM
    NS2.WORDPRESS.COM
    NS3.WORDPRESS.COM

Your name servers are as follows:

    NS37.DOMAINCONTROL.COM
    NS38.DOMAINCONTROL.COM

If you have access to change the nameservers for this domain, please remove all nameservers not on the required list above.

Apologies, Timethief, I didn't consider that I might be conversing with a bot. The name should have been a sly tip-off. My bad.

    To simplify:

I own the domain name I'm trying to use. I subscribed to Premium Service for hosting of the site, but have not been able to access hosting tech support so far.

I'm unable to fix the mapping because I am in a cul de sac:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cul-de-sac

Unable to fix mapping situation. It did not take when I changed the Namerserver settings as described in the mapping instructions. I got this message:

Sorry but wehearyou.net is already mapped to a WordPress.com blog

Maybe best option, as you indicate, is to leave site self-hosted until I can work out the best way to get useful hosting.

    Thanks again,
    Eliot

    Hi Eliot.

I can see that you have a WordPress.com mapping subscription in place for wehearyou.net. This is step number 1 in the step-by-step domain mapping guide that @timethief linked to before:

    https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/#instructions-for-mapping-an-existing-domain

To complete the mapping, you’ll also need to update the domain’s name servers through GoDaddy. GoDaddy’s instructions for updating name servers through them can be found here:

    https://support.godaddy.com/help/article/12317/setting-custom-nameservers-for-domains-registered-with-us

The name servers you’ll need to update to are as follows:

    NS1.WORDPRESS.COM
    NS2.WORDPRESS.COM
    NS3.WORDPRESS.COM

Let us know once you’ve updated the name servers and we’ll be able to see how the domain mapping looks.

I’d also like to apologise for the difficulty you’ve had contacting support. We’re currently working towards greater availability with live chat.

    siobhyb:

This is the problem in a nutshell. I cannot complete the steps you describe above for two reasons:

    1) because this comes up:

Sorry but wehearyou.net is already mapped to a WordPress.com blog

    2) I can’t have the site down right now, parked at GoDaddy until the mapping, if I can manage to get past this error message, completes.

The site was down for several days while I waited for WordPress to advise me before I did the workaround by changing Domain Manager settings at GoDaddy and masking the URL. My most recent attempt at remapping got this response:

Sorry but wehearyou.net is already mapped to a WordPress.com blog

At this moment I am in the middle of a period of meeting with people I have sent the link to and I need them to be able to view the content.

    Any advice about this Catch-22?
    Eliot

    Hi Eliot.

    1) because this comes up:
Sorry but wehearyou.net is already mapped to a WordPress.com blog

That message is expected as you’ve already completed step number 1 here:

    https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/#instructions-for-mapping-an-existing-domain

You need to complete the subsequent steps in order to complete the mapping. This involves updating your domain’s name servers through GoDaddy.

    Hope that makes sense!

  • Unknown's avatar

Hmmm. You do understand that there's nothing intuitive (or encouraging you to take the next step) in the prompt

Sorry but site is already mapped to another blog

that would prompt anyone to go to the next steps. I had this message after I changed the Nameserver settings at GoDaddy and the domain was once again off-line and parked with an ad for GoDaddy.

How long is this remapping likely to take, assuming I ignore the “Sorry” message and just go on as described?

    Hi there!

I can see that the name servers for your domain have now been updated and I’m able to view your site correctly at wehearyou.net.

It can take a few hours for new information about a domain to propagate throughout the web and so you may notice a delay in viewing your site at wehearyou.net. Please rest assured that everything is proceeding normally with your domain.

If you’re still not able to view your site at wehearyou.net after the next few hours, please try clearing your browser’s cache and cookies:
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/browser-issues/#clear-your-cache-and-cookies

If that doesn’t work, try clearing your local DNS cache:
    http://www.opendns.com/support/article/68

Please let me know if you’re still having trouble viewing your site after those steps, or if have any more questions or concerns. I’ll be happy to help further.

Only two live chats with WordPress (window now pops up when I edit posts on the hosted site) were required to get domain viewable on my laptop, phone and now computer, under wehearyou.net.

Thanks for your help– looks like email — or live chat– tech support is now up and running. Is that 24/7?

You can close this subject, I guess– issue finally solved.

Please keep me posted on the display issue with embedded animations on our other thread when you hear back from the theme creator.

    Thanks,
    Eliot

Glad to see you up and running with your domain, Eliot!

The live chat box will be available to you when operators are online. This week, we’re experimenting with move live chat availability so you may see that box more often. :)

I’ll keep you updated on the theme bug in the other thread, also. Hope you have a lovely day!
