Is wordpress right for my business ?

I am debating on whether to use wordpress or a standard hosting account to store sensitive documents for my real estate business with several partners. I initially thought a cloud would work but i really wanted something in the form of a simple website where i can also store images of properties, links to relevant websites and to store sensitive documents that are saved as pdf files, documents such as operating agreements, lease agreements, tax forms, deeds and titles, appraisals, mortgage statements, etc…

I normally zip and encrypt these files stored locally on external hard drives but on several occasions the partners needed access to them so i need a central location for all of them to access. WordPress does not allow zipped files to be uploaded so security is now a concern. The website would be private only allowing the partners access so they all will have the documents available when needed.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

There is no FTP access and we cannot upload zip files. Please read this comparison: WordPress.com vs WordPress.org http://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

Thanks for the info. If you were in my shoes, concerned about security, would you consider using wordpress as a private website to store sensitive documents as described above in my original post? My concern is that even though the site may be private, the administrators at wordpress would still have access to those files and identity theft would be a big concern here…

On the other hand if i pay for a traditional hosting account i can ftp the encrypted zipped files to the webserver and even if anyone were to gain access to those files they would not be able to open them. Bottom line is do i go free or pay for hosting ….

I don’t provide such advice. Perhaps another Volunteer or Staff will chime in.

WordPress.com has infinitely greater security than any WordPress.org blog unless you’re hiring an expensive security consultant. If your site may be a target for hackers, this is a better choice for safety.

In the seven years I’ve been at WP.com I’ve never heard of any info theft by staff, and frankly I can’t believe anyone would DARE: Matt would tear them apart.

What about a site like Drop Box?

I have a couple of friends that have a Real estate company & do a lot of legal work (they are lawyers that sell Real Estate and provide legal advice and services) – they need to have different people in the office work on the same documents and pass them around – last I talked with them they were still happy. There is a pile of different security features – most of which I have forgotten – worth a look

Thank you all for the information. I will go over this with my partners. Dropbox was a consideration but i just didn’t want a traditional cloud based product. They have also changed their terms of service and wording recently concerning security / ToS and a lot of customers are up in arms over this.

Is there a way to make certain pages controlled by different privacy settings ? For example: I have tenants, realtors, property managers, etc that i would like to have access to only a few pages of the website. Currently the main parent home page needs a login and password to access the site, however once logged in you can access all the pages of the site. I would like to limit that to just key pages for certain individuals.

If it’s not possible i could easily create a separate website for each group of people and property but would rather keep it simple on one website.

Thanks again for all your input and help.

If you use a Custom Menu you can simply hide pages so that unless someone has the exact URL they can’t locate the page; would that work for you?

Thanks for replying. I guess what i will do is just create a separate site for each group. It’s easy enough for now and it may actually work to my advantage having a separate site for each. What i was ultimately looking for was a way that a user would be invited to the site ( say tenant A ) and when they logged in only the pages of the site that i specifically allow that tenant would be viewable for that tenant, basically a tenant portal. Something along the lines of when you log into your bank, you are only able to view your accounts and no one else’s.

Other then that the rest of the tools are working out great and glad to have started using wordpress.

If you do this make sure yo set the “Discourage search engines from indexing my site“, or even if the page is not connected WordPress will send a notification to google.

WordPress does not allow zipped files to be uploaded

You can upload ZIP files to your WordPress.com if you buy the annually renewable space upgrade.

Otherwise I can highly recommend a paid box.com account.

The website would be private only allowing the partners access so they all will have the documents available when needed.

Sites marked “Private” are not indexed by search engines and you should mark the site private from the start.
