Is WordPress suitable for me?
-
Dear community.
I am not entirely new to WordPress but have not used it for a couple of years. I have been approached to set up a web site for my Parish Council and have a couple of questions. The blog will be hosted at a proper domain as opposed to wordpress.com. It needs to have the ability to set up and run poles and to store and serve council documents. New documents should be displayed as posted in html but the existing archives are PDF files. Is WordPress right for me and do I need to purchase anything in addition to achieve my goals. Thanks if you took the time read this, and thanks in advance for your answers. Regards Nick

If you are going to self host a site then you should be asking at WordPress.ORG: http://wordpress.org/support/
You can have a “regular domain name” hosted at WordPress.COM with Domain Mapping. There are some limitations so reading the Terms of Service and asking the Support Staff to clarify any questions before a lot of work is done would be prudent.
If you self host you need to find a host, pay the host, then download the WordPress.ORG software and learn about the care and feeding, updating and all that stuff about a web site.
Yes the WordPress software (either option) should do what you want to do easily. New documents could be Posts or Pages and you can link to PDF files.

Thank you. I will look into the pros and cons of both org and com. Previously I self hosted but remember it was quite time consuming setting up and adding functionality. Considering the parish council will running the site them selves org might be a better option. I understand they want some email addresses hosted on their domain so domain mapping might be the answer. Regards Nick

Hi Nick,
Here is a summary of the differences between
wp.ORG (self-hosted)
and
wp.COM (free) -
WordPress is probably one of the best ways to go if you want to set up a long term stand-alone site. Once you’re set up properly adding the features you want is fairly straight forward. Ownership and having your own domain are probably the biggest advantages. Good luck with your site.
