ISO tips to make it easier to make my posts

Hi everyone, I got caught up in the new editor feedback thread and I realized I may not be doing things the best way, and I may be asking for features that I don’t need. I am no IT or network guru but I can get by with instructions.

My goal is to make simple pages likethis, with a medium image left justified, text on the right, and a way to start a new line. My first attempt my kid told me to put in this code

    <div style="clear: both;"></div>
    &nbsp;

after an image/text, and it worked, but when you switched to visual mode it stripped the *nbsp; making it necessary to make sure to open and save in HTML mode.

Today I was shown this code by @designsimply
    <div style="overflow:auto; padding-bottom:1em;">[YOUR IMAGE/TEXT GOES HERE]</div>
and it works. It is more work to use, because I have to repeatably cut and paste, then cut and paste, code that is tedious and error prone. This code is not changed when switching programming mode so I am using it now.

I am using Sequential theme and I want the images to have a border of 2. This is my current process for making a page.

Go to admin page and click Page – Add New, In Visual Mode I click the Insert Media button and then Upload. I add a picture and it remembers I want it medium size and left justified. After it is in the body of the editor I click and edit it to have a border of 2. The images automatically have a link to the full size picture, which I like. I then add my text and then click to HTML mode to add my new line code from above. I cut the code from notepad, and past it in, then cut the image/text from the page, then paste it inside the code. Then I click back to visual mode to repeat the process again for the next picture. :/

I am open to advice or options. Is this normal?

Know that I use only the classic editor and I don’t have the issue you describe.

    re: http://en.support.wordpress.com/visual-editor/#alignment

The alignment icons in the WordPress editor are for aligning text; they are not for aligning images. They are used to achieve wrapping text around images on either the right or left hand side, or to display an image that’s centered without text on either side of it.

Align-left means position left, with the rest of the content wrapping around the right side of the image.

Align-right means position right, with the rest of the content wrapping around the left side of the image.

Align-center means position center, with no wrap-around (= the rest of the content below the image).

If the text beside the images does not occupy the same amount of space that the image beside it does then the text wrapping will continue and the images and text that follow will have a staggered appearance.

To prevent the staggered effect what you do is insert the following snippet of code into the Text (HTML) editor after each image/text pair:
    <div style=”clear:both;”></div>

Okay. I’m visually challenged and I skimmed your post above. Now I had covered one eye and read it all I can see that this is an issue for deignsimply and I tagged this thread for her to locate it and help you.

Hi @timecop, I see in my first code box the ampersand-nbsp; was stripped from my example. That’s the part that is being stripped when changing to visual mode. But it results in no vertical space between pictures. That is why I added the ampersand-nbsp; The second example provided by @designsimply provides the spacing.

@timecop I’m simply in search of tips from experienced users on how to make this process easier. Like the picture border. Are there ways to make this automatic? Like add-ons or something.

@heckenwicke, Can you elaborate on this?

“I think that code would work as one of your own tags (with _clipboard_ and _selection_ as variables) with BBCode extra (FF Plug-in) IF that plug-in would work with the new editor.”

@timethief, sorry it was from another forum I got used to seeing it. My apologies. I need to give it up for now.

I can see after only a few hours my post is down three pages. I give up, this crap is too difficult for this old brain to deal with. All I ever wanted was a website I could work on without asking for help all the time. Now all I can manage to do is upset people by accidentally using the wrong name. I simply do not know how to get the help I need. Screw it all to hell.

I’m sorry I was unable to help. Please be patient while waiting for Staff to give you some assistance with this.

  • Hi @veryfungi, I’m from WordPress.com staff. We’re able to help when you’re up for it again. I’ve sent an email. Cheers!

  • Alright, email sent. To address this publicly, though:

    > Are there ways to make this automatic? Like add-ons or something.

Definitely. You can add the CSS once and for all with a Custom Design upgrade.

You might also consider using a Grid Page, though. Your theme’s Grid Page looks like this — not quite as you’d designed, but it still looks great:
    https://sequentialdemo.wordpress.com/page-templates/grid-page/

(By the way, those images were created as circles; yours would be rectangular unless you designed them as circles.)

Several other themes have lovely grid page options that may suit you well. Also, I noticed your front page is hard-coded, but it looks like you may like a blog-based front page: “I will post news items here.”

Anyhow, I’ve sent an email, so we’ll work with you that way, but hopefully those options will help anyone else who comes across this. Cheers!

Hello supernovia, I moved to godaddy managed hosting of my site. I now have a stable editor with custom css that handles my formatting for me. I now love working on my website again… o/

Not to be rude, but a month late and none of your suggestions would have fixed the problems I avoid using the godaddy managed account.

  • Ah, strange. Someone had just barely flagged this thread for staff attention. I didn’t notice it was so old. I’ll go ahead and close it out.
