Issue changing email address

I am having trouble changing my email address. I would like to change it from my old college email (which was shut down when I graduated) to my current email address.
When I go to ‘Account Settings’ and change the ‘Email Address’ field to my new email address, I get the error message ‘That e-mail address is already being used’ (I briefly created a new account with my new email address, but have since shut it down).
Can you recommend a way around this issue?

Hey there,
Are you certain the email address you would like applied to this account is not in use on any others and that this old account that was associated with the address is closed? As outline here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/email-address/#issues-changing-your-email-address no two accounts can share this same address.
If you are certain of the above two factors I would suggest then tagging modlook in the right sidebar tags section to get the attention of staff to look into this deeper for you and see if this account has been appropriately closed.
