Issue Connecting domain

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi all,

We have made a new website using WordPress (first time using wordpress). The domain is hosted by a company who also look after the email and we’re struggling to connect the domain to the wordpress servers. We have entered the DNS records on the domain hosting, but they are saying the CNAME won’t match as it should be an IP address, but in our WordPress account it says the CNAME record is ‘martinbruno.co.uk’. Is anybody able to advise as to how to progress on this mattet? Any help would be much appreciated.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi there!

I’ll be happy to help you with this! Since you have email services with the domain, I understand you’d like to point it to WordPress.com using our IP addresses (A records and a CNAME record). You can see the records specific to your site at this link.

For anyone else reading this, here are the detailed instructions.

The CNAME record basically just redirects the www version of the domain to the root domain. In other words, the CNAME record should point to martinbruno.co.uk so that http://www.martinbruno.co.uk is redirected to martinbruno.co.uk.

If your domain registrar is asking for an IP address, is that in addition to a “Value” or “Host” or “POINTS TO” field for the CNAME record? Or is an IP address the only thing you can enter for a CNAME record?

If it’s in addition to a VALUE or POINTS TO field (meaning you can insert martinbruno.co.uk), please try inserting one of the IP addresses you see here. As long as the CNAME record for www points to martinbruno.co.uk, it should work.

If you need more help, you can contact the DNS provider’s support team. They should be able to ensure that the CNAME record has the necessary details.

Feel free to let us know if you have more questions.

Hi, thank you for your reply! I have attached a screenshot of the settings when we follow the link you supplied. Does these seem correct?

    Hi there!

Yes, that’s correct. As you can see, the CNAME record doesn’t need any IP address, just the value of the root domain (In your case, martinbruno.co.uk). But if your DNS service provider requires you to add an IP address in addition to the value, you can use one of the IP addresses from the A records above.

Feel free to share a screenshot from your DNS records area. I’ll be happy to take a look. :)
