Issue with temporary display of incorrect URL after editing and republishing
-
Hi, hope someone can help. I’m encountering an issue on my free WordPress blog.
Issue with temporary display of incorrect URL after editing and republishing a post, along with indexing problems on Google and Bing
Whenever I edit a post or page and republish it, the temporarily displayed URL includes numbers instead of the correct URL. However, after closing my blog and reopening it, the correct URL is once again displayed.
I also encountered indexing problems with my latest blog post on both Google and Bing last night. It was the first time I experienced such indexing issues.
To clarify the problem further, here are the steps I follow:
- Edit a post or page on my blog.
- Republish the post or page.
- Upon republishing, the URL shown temporarily changes to something like “https://wordpress.com/page/brenwrites24.wordpress.com/11153” (with random numbers).
- However, once I close and reopen my blog, the correct URL is displayed again (e.g., “https://brenwrites24.wordpress.com/about/“).
I’ve tried clearing my browser cache and waiting for a few minutes to see if the correct URL appears immediately after republishing, but it persists with the temporary URL until I reopen the blog.
Hope someone can help
Thanks

Hi there,
Is the URL you are seeing something like https://brenwrites24.wordpress.com/?p=11153/ perhaps? If you visit that link now it redirects to https://brenwrites24.wordpress.com/about/
To explain, when a new page is published, it can take a moment for the permalink to be assigned. So you may see it as the “page ID” address but this is only temporary.
I’ve tried clearing my browser cache and waiting for a few minutes to see if the correct URL appears immediately after republishing, but it persists with the temporary URL until I reopen the blog.
It sounds like you may be seeing this issue due to browser caching on your end (saving an expired view of what you are seeing) since this should not persist for more than a second or two.
Please try the steps below to clear your browser cache and that should help with the issue.
In simplified terms, the cache is where data about your site is temporarily stored to deliver it more quickly the next time it is requested. While troubleshooting, you may be advised to clear your site’s cache. Clearing cache should not be used as a site speed or optimization method. Instead, you can find helpful information on optimizing your site’s speed here. This guide covers server-side cHope this helps, please let us know if you have any more questions.

Thank you for your response. but no, it shows https://wordpress.com/post/brenwrites24.wordpress.com/12176, not https://brenwrites24.wordpress.com/?p=11153
Once I publish the post or page, it shows the correct URL format, such as “https://brenwrites24.wordpress.com/2023/06/15/berry-and-banana-crumble-recipe/,” matching the name I assigned.
The issue arises when I try to edit a post or page. During editing, it reverts to displaying the URL as “https://wordpress.com/post/brenwrites24.wordpress.com/12176.” Even after I save the edited version, the URL remains the same, with the “Edit” option at the top, making it seem like the page is still in editing mode. To resolve this, I have attempted to clear my browser history multiple times, but the problem persists.

Hey there,
Thanks for reaching back out, I think there may be confusion happening which I’m hoping I can clear up.
The issue arises when I try to edit a post or page. During editing, it reverts to displaying the URL as “https://wordpress.com/post/brenwrites24.wordpress.com/12176.”
So this URL, is an admin URL and is only visible to you, or another admin on the site. It’s where you would edit a page or post. The number at the end is the post ID.
Once I publish the post or page, it shows the correct URL format, such as “https://brenwrites24.wordpress.com/2023/06/15/berry-and-banana-crumble-recipe/,” matching the name I assigned.
This would not change, unless you change the permalink settings in the post settings.
So, to clarify, https://brenwrites24.wordpress.com/2023/06/15/berry-and-banana-crumble-recipe/, does not change to https://wordpress.com/post/brenwrites24.wordpress.com/12176 when you edit the post.
I’m hoping this helps. :)
