Issues Importing: Site not recognized, media won't import.
-
Hello,
I’m transferrin content from a self-hosted WordPress install to WP.com. According to the Importer, my WordPress site isn’t recognized as a WordPress site. So, I used the XML import, instead.
I’ve done the import, but none of the media is being imported. (There wasn’t an option to explicitly do this, so I assume it’s implicit.) My site is public, so I’m not sure why the content isn’t coming over.
Any help appreciated.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Is your self-hosted site still online? If not, that would explain the problem.
Your site media is not part of your export file – it’s imported when you trigger the import using your XML export file.
If the site is still online, can you let us know that site URL and we’ll be better able to advise.
Thanks!

Hi there,
Are you getting an error while importing the XML file? Is the import stuck or does it finishes?
-
No errors. The XML imports just fine.
The only time I get an error is when I try to import directly from the website. I’m just told that my site isn’t WordPress (although it has been since… 2007, I think?).

Hello there!
Im glad to see the XML works ok.
It’s surprising you’re seeing the other message – who is the hosting provider I wonder if there’s a block in place there of some sort.
-
-
Bluehost.
The thing is, I’d actually done something like this before — same host, same WordPress install. No issues.
-
Mmm, this may well be it:
I also have SiteLock on my site
The importer tries to connect to the site to get each piece of media, so perhaps it’s blocking the import at some point, or perhaps it’s even put us on a don’t-allow list.
Would you be willing to empty the site (so it can try again with the media, vs skipping already-imported posts), briefly turn off Sitelock, then try importing again?
-
Sure. How would I empty the site? Manually delete all the entries? Or is there another method?
-
Hi,
You can either Delete or Empty the site: the first option wipes out everything, including the WordPress.com domain; the second option is only for the content (posts, pages, categories, tags, etc.).Here’s some more information about the process of deleting the content:
https://wordpress.com/support/empty-site/ -
PLEASE NOTE: do not delete the WordPress.com site as that will make your current site address unavailable.
Follow the second link that @ironnysh shared to empty your site instead.
You can also bulk delete entries by doing this from the WP Admin dashboard instead.
https://wordpress.com/support/posts/edit-posts-screen/#bulk-edit
https://wordpress.com/support/pages/edit-pages-screen/#bulk-edit
https://wordpress.com/support/comments/#bulk-edit-modeHope that helps, but post back here if you have any questions.
@ironnysh Thanks for your help. Kindly read the thread to understand the intent before suggesting that someone delete their site. :)

One more thing:
Staff why is there no mention of bulk delete as an option in the Empty Site support guide?
-
Hello there,
That’s a good point! I would imagine because this is mainly found in wp-admin – but it could now make more of an appearance thanks to the new unified navigation:
-
Alright, problem solved. It was the SiteLock. I had them take it down from my site and the import worked beautifully. Thanks for the help!
-
Great news!
Thanks for the feedback, @justjennifer. I’ll emphasize the domain/site address issue next time I mention the site deletion option.
Wish you all a lovely day!
