Issues making changes to a theme.

  I’m trying edit a theme to change some background colors, but when I copy the html code from the original theme into the CSS stylesheet editor, it looks completely different from the original. My technique was: open code in frontpage, edit color codes, copy code, past in editor. Am I missing some code that needs to be added in somewhere?
