Issues since Downgrade

  • Unknown's avatar

About a year ago, I downgraded my site from WordPress.org to WordPress.com. It was a bit of a fiasco because I went about doing things in the wrong order, but I managed to get my new site up and running. I opted for a free site with a purchased domain.

First problem; I mistyped my site name when I set up the free site. Which isn’t a huge deal in and of itself since that isn’t the URL people see, but it’s annoying to me. Somehow I also have another site with the correct name. Can I just transfer the content and domain over? What would be the correct way to do this?

Ever since I downgraded, I’ve had issues. It won’t show me stats, it won’t allow me to view or approve comments. Even when I get notifications for things and click on them, it doesn’t actually follow through. I get taken to different sites (I currently have 3 with the same-ish name (the two free and the one paid domain)).

It has just been a huge pain and I’m not sure what the fix is. I don’t even know if this post makes sense, but I wasn’t sure where else to seek help.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi there,

If you already own the other free WordPress.com address, then you need to transfer things over, yes, as an address change won’t work in this case.

To transfer your content, use our export/import feature under Tools in the dashboard.

To transfer your domain, you can follow the steps here:

    https://wordpress.com/en/support/transfer-a-domain-to-another-wordpress-com-account/#transfer-domain-to-another-site-you-own

Let us know once you’ve moved the content, and we can then move your plan, and also your stats and subscribers over.

When you click on My Sites ->Switch Site, which site are you selecting?

If you’re selecting theextraordinarymama.com, that’s your old Jetpack-connected site. To see the stats, comments, etc for the current site, you need to select theextraordinarymamacom.wordpress.com.

In fact, if that Jetpack site is no longer online, it would be best if we just disconnected it from your account completely. It won’t in any way affect your domain, which is registered with us and connected to your WordPress.com site.

Please confirm if we should do that for you.

Thank you so much for your response! It was very helpful.

I have moved the content from the original site (theextraordinarymamacom.wordpress.com) to the one I want (theextraordinarymama.wordpress.com). With regards to the domain transfer, do I do that now or do I wait until my Plan / subscribers / etc have been transferred over?

As far as when I select My Sites ->Switch Site, the frustration is that it will sometimes change which site I’m on without me telling it to. And even when I do select the correct site, it still won’t let me approve comments, etc.

As long as my domain (theextraordinarymama.com) won’t be affected, I think that disconnecting the old Jetpack-connected site would be helpful. That’s kind of the feeling I’ve had all along, like my old and new information is tangled up and complicating functionality.

Thank you again for your help!

  • Hi there,

It looks like you have the same content on both sites, so at this point we can help by moving your domain and plan over to theextraordinarymama.wordpress.com (so it has the domain of theextraordinarymama.com instead) so just confirm you are ready for that here and we will take care of the rest!

Right now it’s definitely confusing due to the fact that you have your old theextraordinarymama.com site listed, as well as the two WordPress.com sites you created here… all with similar naming of course.

I’d say this is just temporary though. Once you confirm you would like to move your domain and plan over to theextraordinarymama.wordpress.com, we will also migrate your historical stats and subscribers from theextraordinarymama.com so everything will be one one site.

After that you can pare things down so that your account shows only one site and that will cut down greatly on the confusion.

    Thanks!

That sounds perfect – thank you! I am ready for you to shift things over.

Is there anything else that I need to do on my end before you make the switch? I’m ready whenever you’re able to do it.

    Hi there!

Apologies for the delay! I’m not sure why we weren’t notified when you replied on the 5th, but we’ll get you sorted now.

I moved your Personal subscription to theextraordinarymama.wordpress.com as requested – now you need to move the domain there by following these steps:

    https://wordpress.com/support/domains/move-a-domain-to-another-wordpress-com-site/#step-two-move-the-domain

This isn’t something we can do for you, unfortunately. Let us know when you’ve done that and we’ll remove the Personal sub from the old site.

I’ll disconnect your old Jetpack site but before I update the stats data, I do see you had some stats under your old Jetpack site – would you like those moved over as well? I already moved your subscribers to the new site, so that’s been completed.

We’ll wait to hear back from you!

No worries at all! I’m just eager to get it all sorted out. :)

    I have moved the domain.

Yes, I’d like any stats / info from the old site moved over. Thank you!

  • Hi there,

We were able to migrate stats from both sites successfully. Let us know if you have any questions.

    Thank you!

    Thank you!

The only issue is that when I type theextraordinarymama.com in the search bar, it switches to theextraordinarymama.wordpress.com. Did I do something wrong on my end, or..?

  • From your dashboard, go to Upgrades > Domains and click the three dots to the right of your custom domain to set it as your primary domain:

For full instructions on how to set your primary domain, please visit our support page:

I thought I had done that already – oops!

Thank you again so much for helping me get this straightened out! I am so pleased with the customer service. ^_^
