Issues when setting a Static homepage

I’ve designed a homepage to be used statically instead of the WP blog as described in the tut above.
However whenever I publish the page as the homepage ‘an extra slider is added to the page’ then the rest of the page resolves.
Althought the ‘fullwith-page’ template is selected and should still be used with my page, WP seems to be using another template file by default.
I looked at the code when my static page is assigned as the homepage, and I see the ‘extra slider code’ which I am unable to remove as it is pulled automatically from another template file in the background.
BTW, I’ve looked at all the template files and none include a slider, nor does the index.php
