issues with adding links to media

Thanks for your input Timethief. It seems that this is a widespread problem, hence the unexpected delay in response from Staff. I see that Modlook is on the tags now.I will bear that in mind for future issues! :-)

    Thanks Time Thief.

My issue is as a previous poster – “My specific problem happens when I try to have a photo open in another window when clicked. I click the link option in the toolbar and then check the box “open link in a new window/tab.” After clicking “Update,” the photo disappears, replaced by its URL.”

I messaged Support and no doubt they are on it, since it’s not just me. :-)

Having the same problem as britishbookworm2014, when trying to link to media, it’s replacing the media with text.

Goodmorning Timethief ;) thank you for responding. So glad you feel better now. I’ll be patient and wait. Have a good day!

While we’re waiting for Staff to answer:

when I am trying to add links to media, (using the toolbar) the image is being replaced by the text link.

To the best of my understanding, the toolbar button for Links in the Post Editor is intended for text not media. The place to add/edit links to media is in the Add Media>Media Manager when you first insert the image using Linkto: Custom URL. See here:
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/links/image-links/
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/images/image-settings/#attachment-display-settings

If you need to edit the link after inserting the image, click on the image and then on the pencil icon that appears above the image. When the Media Manager opens, you can then edit the link in the Linkto area.

@justjennifer: for years I’ve used the toolbar button “” insert/edit link” for pictures that I want enlarged in a new window.
I select the photo in my post, click on the button, the link to the photo is already there, and by simply clicking on the little box “open in new window” you’re done. When I do that now the photo disappears and is replaced by a text link.

If I want my picture to link to another item like a youtube video or a webpage then of course I enter the link to that item.

    @margali – I understand.

In my opinion, it would be really useful when inserting single images in a post or page for the first time to have the tickbox to open the image in a new window right there in the Insert Media>Media Manager. As it is right now, in order to do that you have to go back and edit the individual image in the Media Manager to add it.

    Sort of OT/
I’m looking at this post on your site https://margali.wordpress.com/2015/08/05/expeditie-met-3-katten-2/ and wondering why you are not taking advantage of the Gallery feature to display your images. https://en.support.wordpress.com/gallery/

Regardless in order to troubleshoot this, it would be very helpful to know your exact workflow when inserting images and then the link.

After a little experimenting, here’s what I think you’re doing:
    Click “Add Media”>
    Select Image in Media Manager>
    Select size>
    Select “Link to: Media file”>
    Insert Media in Post

THEN from the Visual Post Editor you:
Click on your image in your post to select it>
Click the Link Button in the Post Editor’s toolbar>
Tick the box to “Open link in new window/tab”>
Click on “Update” and watch your image turn into a text link.

    Is this correct?

If so, from “THEN” above, you can also:
Click on the image in your post>
Click on the pencil icon that appears just above the image>
Tick the checkbox in the Media Manager to “Open link in New window/tab”>
    Click on “Update”.

Your image should remain an image and in your post it will open in a new window/tab.

Sort of OT@justjennifer: I’m so grateful! didn’t know that gallery option existed. Exploring options is not my strong point: once I know how something works I will do that for years, and a simple as possible …. It looks so much better that way. Usually I have only 1 or 2 pics, but in this case it looks great! Thank you so much.
I ‘ll come back later and thank you for your time with experimenting ;)

    You’re very welcome.

If you have questions about the Gallery feature, and I think you will (like how do I hide the EXIF data that appears in the Photo Carousel that opens after clicking an image), please open a new thread so that we can discuss it there and not hijack this one. “-) https://en.forums.wordpress.com/?new=1

For anyone joining this discussion on this page, non-hijack aside, still requiring a fix is the loss of the Visual toolbar’s ability to embed a link into an image. It’s the fast and evidently popular option.

@sciencefic – I realize it’s a change in work flow for some people, however you can add a link to an image directly in the Media Manager when inserting the single image in your post. Less clicks needed.

If you want that link to open in a new window/tab, it’s the same number of clicks to edit the image via the Edit Image’s pencil icon as it is to click the Insert/Edit Link button in the Visual Editor’s tool bar.

that doesnt help if, like me, an image gets used more than once. This was working just fine, and now it doesnt. Not even if i edit the html code to point to the correct location.

  • Unknown's avatar

@britishbookworm2014 You can use the same image multiple times in the same post and change the Custom URL for each image in the Media Manager when inserting the image.

Here’s my test post for you: https://ablogdemo.wordpress.com/2015/08/07/test-1-2-3/

  • Unknown's avatar

I appreciate your input on this matter, Jennifer. Yes, flow is important.

If we’re counting clicks then adding via the toolbar requires 5. Adding via the pencil icon requires 8.

  • Unknown's avatar

@ Jennifer: By clicks, I refer to keyboard actions.

  • Unknown's avatar

@sciencefic-thanks for that info. For me it is the same number of clicks so I assume we are using two different methods to get to the same point.

If you want to list your workflow to insert an image with a link attached to it, please do. All information is helpful for when Staff finally do look in on this thread.

  • Unknown's avatar

For me it is the same number of clicks

Meaning same number of clicks for me whether I insert an image with a clickable link and then edit the image to make that link open in a new window/tab.

For me it is less clicks to simply insert a linked image (with no new window/tab).
