Issues with domain name

    Hi there,

I have two websites, one that is active and one that I set up just in case anything happened to it (nothing is on it and I never log in to it.) My ‘back-up’ website had the domain name of jpjournalismonline.wordpress.com, but I changed it to jpjournalismfootball.wordpress.com so I could use the jpjournalismonline.wordpress.com domain name for my website I use all of the time.

However, I changed that around a week ago and when I go to change my domain name from what it is now (jpjournalismcom.wordpress.com) to jpjournalismonline.wordpress.com, it still says that it is unavailable, even though when I Google jpjournalismonline.wordpress.com, it says that it does not exist.

I wanted my domain name to be jpjournalism.wordpress.com but if somebody already has that domain name, can I not use it?

Any help with this would be appreciated.

    Thank you,
    Jack

  • Hi there,

In cases where you change the address of your site (i.e. change the spelling) the old site address is no longer available and can’t be recovered after the fact. More info here: https://wordpress.com/support/changing-site-address/

I wanted my domain name to be jpjournalism.wordpress.com but if somebody already has that domain name, can I not use it?

We cannot recycle or reassign site addresses (URLs) that have previously been used, even if the site is no longer active. Because someone started that site before you they own the address, and its’ not possible to free it up for you to use with your site.

However, if you upgrade to one of the plans listed here, that will allow you to set the address of your site to jpjournalism.com, since you do own that custom domain. https://wordpress.com/pricing/

Hope that helps. Please let us know if you have any more questions.
