Issues with Gateway template
-
I’m using the Gateway template and there are a few issues I can’t get around.
First I have changed the header image, but when loading the page it quickly has a red background colour present. It is also there when I change the size of the browser window. How do I get rid of that?
Also, I have changed the order of my tabs in the menu, but it does not change on the actual site. Why is that?
I also can’t work out how to change the colour of the tab links and other links.
Any help much appreciated.

You require either a Premium upgrade or a Business Plan upgrade https://wordpress.com/pricing/ to edit the CSS on any site hosted by wordpress.com.
The way your theme is designed to function and set up instructions are found at https://wordpress.com/theme/gateway/. The live demo site link is found there too.
We cannot change the way any theme is designed to function. We can change appearance only, provided we have upgraded and undertake CSS editing.
Note 1: If you have the required upgrade you can use this link https://en.forums.wordpress.com/forum/css-customization#postform so you can create a thread that will appear in the CSS Forum where you will get the help you need with CSS editing.
Note 2: You can also post there prior to purchasing an upgrade to get an answer to whether or not what you want to do can be accomplished via CSS editing.

Thanks for the help, though a bit confused.
I’m not trying to edit the CCS, just the order of the tabs on the menu. Do I need to upgrade to be able to do that?
Also, the most pressing issue is the header image. I just want it to display correctly, at the moment it does not even though I followed the instructions in with regard to the right pixel dimensions.
Please advise.

No, you don’t. The reason the order of your menu items is not changing on the front end of your site is that you haven’t yet assigned your custom menu to the theme; what you’re seeing is the default menu. To finish setting up your custom menu, go into your Customizer‘s Menus panel, click Primary, and then check the box next to “Primary Menu.”

You can choose from any of the free custom palettes in your Customizer, under Colors & Backgrounds. Click “Palettes” to see the six available palettes.

Changing the colour palette will change that default red colour.
For best results, you can try the method you can see in action on the Gateway demo:
1. Choose an image without text as your header image, because the header is not meant for logos or text (https://s0.wp.com/wp-content/themes/pub/gateway/img/hero-bg.jpg)
2. Create a separate logo file and upload it in the Site Identity panel (https://gatewaydemo.files.wordpress.com/2015/05/gatewaylogo1.png)
One thing to consider is that Gatweay isn’t designed to be used without sidebar widgets – you can see that the page is a bit unbalanced (off-centre) without them: https://lorenzencommunications.wordpress.com/about/
If Gateway doesn’t work well for your needs, you might want to look at another theme, such as the brand new Radcliffe 2: https://radcliffe2demo.wordpress.com/
