Issues with Import/Export features of WordPress.com

    Hi there,

We have been experiencing issues with Import/Export features. We are not able to export posts from one wordpress.com blog to another.

Moreover, something seems seriously wrong with export feature because I tried to export just a single post after linking it with a category and then export posts of ONLY that category but the exported ZIP file size was 1.41 MB where as after unzipping it the XML file size was 143 MB. How the XML file size of a single post can be 143 MB?

    Please help. Thanks.

  • Hi there,

What site were you exporting the content from? Is it from another site not hosted with WordPress.com or a site hosted with us? Let me know and I’d be happy to look into this.

    Thanks,

    Hi,

The sites/blogs are hosted at wordpress.com. All are private. Here are few URLs:

    conholdatehostingleads.wordpress.com
    conholdatesupportlead.wordpress.com

  • Thanks, the first one has close to 5K posts with close to 17K comments. That can take up a fair bit of space. But one single post shouldn’t be that big. If you look at the XML file it generates, what all do you see there?

Are you trying to copy the full site to the 2nd url?

I reviewed exported XML file (143 MB). I believe Export feature is not working correctly. For example, conholdatehostingleads.wordpress.com/category/moved/ category has only ONE post under it which you can also confirm by checking it.

But when I export it as shown in this screenshot the exported ZIP file size was 1.41 MB where as unzipped XML file size was 143 MB. Please check and confirm. Thanks.

Similarly, import feature also seems buggy and doesn’t work. Please also look into it.

  • Thanks for the screenshot and the details.
Could you also reply to what @supernovia mentioned? If you look at the XML file it generates, what all do you see there?

Have you tried to export the file for the second time? Does it also weigh the same?

I tried to view XML contents and looks like it imported more posts where as it should have only imported one post based on the category I chose while exporting. This is why I shared that export feature didn’t work as expected.

Are you trying to copy the full site to the 2nd url?

No, I just tried to copy select posts.

Have you tried to export the file for the second time? Does it also weigh the same?

I tried 2-3 times 2 days ago following the same procedure (exporting based on a selected category that had only single post linked with) and resulting ZIP file size was 1.41 MB which becomes 143 MB after unzipping. I didn’t try today. Would you like me to try again?

Did you guys look into it or tried to reproduce the issue at wordpress.com? You may try with the blogs I mentioned.

  • Hi there,

Can you please export that 1.41 MB file once more and upload it using the link below so I can have a look?

    Hi Fotis,

Can you please export that 1.41 MB file once more and upload it using the link below so I can have a look?

I have re-exported file and uploaded using the dropbox link you shared. Looking forward to updates from you. Thanks.

  • I can confirm the same result with the file you shared.

There is an excessive amount of post meta data being included (4,043,254 lines to be exact), I’ve honestly never seen that much for a single post, though I don’t see any of that on the post itself.

I have asked our developers to take a look, and we’ll let you know when we hear back.

Thanks for the confirmation. I will be looking forward to the updates.

  • Our team has fixed this up and you should be able to export/import now. Please try again. It would be helpful to know more details about the work flow that you’ve followed as well in case this happens again.

    Hi Liz,

Thanks. I will try again and update here about the results.

I simply added one post to a category (named as Moved) and then tried to export posts based on “Moved” category which resulted in the ZIP file I shared with you guys.

    Hi Liz,

I tried and here are the results:

    1. Export works well now. I exported the same single post by category and this time ZIP file size was reduced to 15.84 KB from 1.41 MBs so this seems good.

    2. Import seems to have some issue. I tried to import exported XML file using https://wordpress.com/import/conholdatesupportlead.wordpress.com and it showed me message: Success! File uploaded but nothing happened. I don’t see the imported post/category in the blog. How much time a single post import should take? Can you please look into it and share that why import didn’t work?

Moreover, there is a UX issue with import feature. I have 10’s of users at conholdatehostingleads.wordpress.com blog and to even import a single post into conholdatesupportlead.wordpress.com, I have to choose and match users from Source to Destination blogs. I think, Import feature can easily be made smart enough to auto-match users (with same usernames) at both source and destination blogs. This can save our huge time. Thanks.

You shouldn’t have to wait to see the results. Have you tried logging off and logging back into your account? What’s the title of the post you’re looking for?

    Hi there,

What’s the title of the post you’re looking for?

    “Import Fails at Two Blogs”

You shouldn’t have to wait to see the results

It’s still not imported at conholdatesupportlead.wordpress.com so definitely there is issue with Import feature as well. Please look into it. Thanks.

  • Thanks for confirming, I have asked our developers to take a look.

What we saw on our end with the export file is that the post in question had been exported and imported either from one site to another repeatedly.

Each import adds a bit of post meta, like “this used to be over there” and that built up into the millions.

Does that sound even remotely like something you might be doing in your own workflow, multiple imports and exports?

  • Ok, it looks like you’re hitting known state/cache issue there.

Please reload the page, cancel the import via cancel on the success page.

Then reload again, click WordPress, cancel again. Reload and then try to do the import.

I tried above and then re-imported XML file but can’t see post at conholdatesupportlead.wordpress.com so Import is not working.

Note: I only matched two users from the list of source and destination blog users.
