Issues with new domain connection

  • Unknown's avatar

We recently purchased a WordPress starter plan, and we purchased a domain separately – sutherlandstays.co.za. Then, we requested the registrar to update the DNS records on their side, which was completed successfully – the site displays at the custom domain site.

Then, we set the domain to be the primary site address.

Now, I’m having issues with parts of the admin panel redirecting to a version of the old domain. For eg, `sutherlandstays.co.za/wp-admin` redirects to `sutherlandstayscom.wordpress.com/wp-admin/`

I can access ‘Pages’, but ‘Create a new page’ redirects to this: `sutherlandstayscom.wordpress.com/wp-admin/post-new.php?post_type=page`

A similar thing happens in Settings, I can view the General settings page, but ‘Reading’ redirects.

Please advise what’s causing this and what I can do? Did I miss a setting somewhere?

    Hi there!

Nope, you didn’t miss anything! All sites hosted here at WordPress.com have their wp-admin page addresses as the free WordPress.com URL. Anything public facing will use your custom domain.

Hope that clarifies things! Let us know if you have any other questions.

    Hi there,

I realise i wasn’t specific enough in in my original message. Some of the admin pages are redirecting AND getting a name related error –

    This site can’t be reached
sutherlandstayscom.wordpress.com’s DNS address could not be found. Diagnosing the problem.
    DNS_PROBE_POSSIBLE

Because the old domain name doesn’t resolve, i can’t access most of the admin pages, because they can not load.

    Does that make sense?

  • Hi Willa,

All the WP-Admin pages on your site are loading without issue for me, so the problem isn’t with your site.

But it looks like the name server changes on your domain might still be propagating, which could also interfere with the redirects we set up for the free address on our end when you add a custom domain:

    https://www.whatsmydns.net/#NS/sutherlandstays.co.za

Who is your domain provider, and when did you request that they update the name servers?

Please check if clearing your browser cache or rebooting your modem/router after unplugging it for a few seconds make any difference.

(P.S. I’m very glad I’m not in Sutherland at the moment. You all must be freezing :D )

    Hello,

Really? All the admin pages are loading on your side? Even the ones in my original post? (create page, reading settings)

I have cleared my browser cache, tried incognito tab, different browser, mobile phone, etc, to no avail.

I’m in Georgia, the country, currently, not sure if that affects things at all, though I don’t see how.

The change was made with the registrar, Afrihost, on the 15 th of June already. So this should all be propagated by now.

(ps – you’re right, I’m very happy I’m not currently in Sutherland!)

  • All the admin pages and editor pages are loading for me, yes.

Your location could be a factor, yes – if you’re connecting through a DNS server where the records haven’t propagated yet, that DNS server won’t be sending your browser to our servers to fetch the site. I’m in South Africa, and for me everything is working and accessible.

If the changes were already made on the 15th already they shouldn’t still be propagating, though. That process usually doesn’t take more than around 72 hours.

But unfortunately that’s not something we have any control over, so please contact Afrihost so they can check into this from their end.

Meanwhile, you might be able to access the pages that won’t load for you if you use a VPN to route your connection through another country.

Updating your computer/router’s DNS to go through an alternative provider, like https://www.opendns.com/ or https://1.1.1.1/, rather than your internet provider’s default DNS servers might also help.

Ok, thanks for checking that for me. What a strange and unfortunate issue. I’m back in SA soon, I guess s the website will have to wait until then. Hopefully it Just Magically Works ™ when I’m back. I’ll also contact afrihost and ask their advice. Can’t hurt.
