Issues With New Gallery Block
-
Hello,
I am experiencing an issue with the new gallery block. I use it for almost all my images, even single images, because it’s an easy way to have them be clickable for a bigger version. Since my most recent post, some of my gallery blocks are not working correctly while reading my blog on the homepage.
This is the post in question: https://marinaneira.com/2021/11/28/a-happy-thanksgiving-weekend/
However, in that direct post link, and in editor previews, and in the editor itself, everything is working as it should. This issue is only evident if you go to my homepage https://marinaneira.com/, then you can scroll down to this post and see that on some gallery blocks, it’s showing all the images as a single column, and the images are non clickable.
Any idea what the reason for this could be?
In case it could be part of the reason, here is the additional CSS currently on my blog:
.site-content .entry-header, .site-content .entry-content, .site-content .entry-summary, .site-content .entry-meta, .page-content { max-width: 1000px; margin-left: auto; } .site-content .entry-content { max-width: 900px; } #page { margin: 0 auto; } body.custom-background { background-repeat: repeat; } /* Centering video embed element */ .wp-video { margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; }Hope I explained myself correctly, thank you in advance for any help anyone can provide and apologies in advance for having to look at my blog, it’s, uh, interesting.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

This is odd. It’s definitely not your CSS (the problem remained with all of it removed), and it’s not your theme (the problem remains when live previewing the Twenty Twenty-One theme).
I have a theory, but it’s a but more destructive than I’d like to try without your permission, so let me describe:
You have the gallery set for 2 columns, but you have an uneven number of images: 5. This should be fine, I have plenty of galleries like that myself, but I am curious to see if removing just one image makes a difference.
Please try that and let me know, or let me know if it’s ok for me to try that on your behalf.

Hello Mac, thank you very much for looking into the issue so potential problems can be ruled out, it is definitely progress in my eyes. I’ve done as you said, but while on my homepage the issue remains. I should point out that some of the other gallery blocks having issues (being unclickable) were single-image blocks anyway.
Something I should point out: if I duplicate one of the gallery blocks that are working as they should, and replace the images in the duplicated block with the images in the problem block (if that makes sense) the issue remains, even so. I don’t understand why the problem is limited only to some gallery blocks, and only to this view mode.
Also, it definitely began with the update, I did not have the issue before, if that helps.

Hi there,
After taking a look at your site homepage, I did see that the gallery on “A HAPPY THANKSGIVING WEEKEND” is not being displayed correctly. However, it seems that if I look at other posts that display on the homepage like on some of those the gallery does appear correctly.
For example, if I scroll on your site homepage, I see correctly functioning galleries for:
– FITNESS LOG 11/28
– PRE-THANKSGIVING WRAP-UPI’m not familiar with your site contents, but I’m curious if you have seen any other posts on your site that have broken image galleries on the homepage. Or is the issue only with the galleries in your A HAPPY THANKSGIVING WEEKEND post?
Thanks for the additional info!

Hi Jerry,
To first answer your question, indeed the issue seems to be only present on the Happy Thanksgiving Weekend post. And I did fix the issue, but it is quite inconvenient. When I removed the “read more” cut on the post, every gallery block began to work correctly. I assume this is a bug?

Ah, that is interesting. On my test site I can also now reproduce this issue at wil by adding/removing the More Block. Thank you for spotting that!
I have reported this issue to our engineers but I don’t have a timeframe for when this will be addressed, as that will depend on what they find in their investigation.
In the meantime there is not a workaround that I can think of, though you could consider adding your spoiler content on another page, and adding a link to that page (from your blog post) as a way to ensure that content is not shown on the homepage.
Thanks for your patience!

Thank you, Jerry. I’ll cross my fingers for a resolution. To further confirm that the issue is related to new posts only, the FITNESS LOG 11/28 post, which has a “more” cut as well, is not presenting this problem on the home page.

Correct, I suspect it’s an issue with how the code is output currently, but does not seem to affect older posts. We’ll update you as soon as we know more on when you can continue to use the More block, thanks!

Hi again @marinaneira
I wanted to update you to let you know that this issue has been resolved by our engineers. You should now be able to use the Gallery Block/More Block freely in your layouts without further issue.
I did visit your site to see to confirm that galleries are no longer broken, and all I could find was this cuteness right here! If you do spot any problems though, please let us know!
Thanks for rocking WordPress.com! :)
