Issues with Pages

  • Unknown's avatar

Hi, I have two issues with pages:

    1) Is there any way to adjust it so that the entire content of a page doesn’t show up in search results or tags? This does not happen with posts, but with pages.

    2) Is there a way to add an edit button my pages?

I am using a third party theme (Elsie) and have tried to contact the developer to no avail.

    This is my site:

    Thank you!

  • Hey there,

Can you try setting the excerpt for the page to see if that helps?

Typically that’s built into most themes. It should appear if you’re logged in, and you should also have our toolbar at the top that can help. Are you not seeing that? If not, let us know and we’ll investigate.

Also, you can reach out to support directly if you’d like:

Hi, thanks for responding. I’m sorry, I’m just now seeing this.

Setting an excerpt for the pages doesn’t help. The results still show the entire page.

When logged in, the edit button shows up for posts, but not pages. The WP toolbar at the top doesn’t show an edit button either. In order to edit a page, I have to access it via the admin dashboard.

I can contact support directly. I wasn’t sure they could help me since I have a third party theme.

  • Hi there,

Setting an excerpt for the pages doesn’t help. The results still show the entire page.

To clarify, you are referring to the text snipped you see in Google search result pages? On our end you can set a page excerpt and this will function as the “meta description” as defined by Google. However, Google does scan your entire page text as it indexes your site, and has a tendency to show text it considers relevant to the search terms used in the original search.

While it is a good practice to include a meta description (excerpt) there is nothing that requires Google to use it. The do reserve the right to show other bits of text as they see fit.

If you would like to have greater control over how Google indexes your site, you may wish to connect your site to Google Search Console. Instructions on how to connect here: https://wordpress.com/support/site-verification-services/

In this case, if it shows on some places and not others, it’s due to how the creators of our theme coded it initially. It may be possible to add the edit button on pages as well, but it will require a change to the source code of your theme.

Since we’re not familiar with the Elise theme, you can find help with that here: https://elfwp.com/support/

Hope that helps. Please let us know if you have any more questions.

    Hi, thanks for responding.

I’m not referring to Google search results, but search results within our site if you use the search function. Post results show up as an excerpt with a “read more” button, but search results from pages include the entire page. I have this same problem with tag results. If someone clicks on a tag, they get an excerpt for a post with that tag, but for pages with the tag they get the entire page in the results. I’m sorry if this is confusing.

As for the edit button on pages, I have tried to contact support for the Elsie theme but they never respond. It’s very frustrating.

  • Hi,

Post results show up as an excerpt with a “read more” button, but search results from pages include the entire page. I have this same problem with tag results.

This is how your theme’s search page (template) is configured to display pages and tags results. That template might be configurable, but that’s something only the theme maker can help you with.

If your theme can’t be configured, there’s a workaround. You can use the Page Break block as a “read more” replacement for your pages. However, this will affect how your pages look outside the search results. If you have no problem with that, you can check that block here:
