Issues with Personal site draft posts not previewing/publishing

  • Unknown's avatar

I can’t seem to get draft posts to preview or publish any more. I went with WordPress for my blog because I thought the support would be there for this kind of issue, but I can’t find anything.
I get the Page Not Found message whether it’s a draft post or one I publish.
Very grateful for any help for what feels like a basic issue experienced by a basic user!

    Hi there!

I can see that you have a total of three posts in draft right now. Can you tell us what happens when you try to publish them using the Publish button located at the top right corner of the post editor?

If you see an error message, can you take a screenshot and share it with us? Here’s how to take a screenshot:

Thank you for your response. This is incredibly frustrating – but I’m also relieved. I have what appears to be a workaround for the issue I’ve had for a couple of weeks so it now appears to have been resolved and I have no idea why or how.

The workaround is not to use ‘Preview’ when editing the Draft, but to use it from the menu in the screen shot here

If I do that, I get this:

But if I use the Publish or Preview option here

This is what appears. I tested by Publishing Privately but I have tried the Public option as well The only other thing I’d point out is that I have a blog post with a similar name that you can see on the right. But the permalink for the current page is now la-mmf and that’s very different than the first post. It’s also the name I gave to another version of this post I started to create when I was trying to fix the problem. Could the permalinks have got mixed up? The other attempt was called ‘La MMF’ in the title but that version is now in the trash.
This feels like a likely explanation. The second post I made called ‘La Mission Militaire Française attaché à l’Armée Britannique (2)’ somehow clashed with La Mission Militaire Française attaché à l’Armée Britannique (1) and now La Mission Militaire Française attaché à l’Armée Britannique (2) has the permalink for the trashed post entitled ‘La MMF attaché à l’Armée Britannique’. But I don’t know why!

Please do tell me what you think. I’d like to understand what I have done wrong and why this has now been resolved.

    Many thanks, Bryn

  • Hi there,

Yes it is possible that editing permalinks (and accidentally creating two permalinks that match) could create this issue. With that in mind we do not recommend manually editing these links if you can avoid it. WordPress automatically assigns permalinks so that they do not clash like this.

Do you have this same preview issue with other posts? Or only with the one you have mentioned with the similar looking titles? I tried previewing these on my end and did not have the same issue, possibly because they are published now but not drafts.

Do ou continue to have this problem? If so can you share the direct link to the editor view you are on when you have this problem? We would like to check directly. Also I wonder if this is an issue if you try a different browser? To rule out Chrome as the source of the issue what if you try Firefox or MS Edge (Internet Explorer) instead?
