It Says I Cannot Map a "www." Website to WordPress

    Hi there,

I have purchased my domain through Weebly, “www.collegecourtreport.com”, but was hoping to map it to WordPress. However, when I go to do so, it says that I am unable to map websites to WordPress that have “www” at the beginning. Is there any way around this, or am I stuck with the site through Weebly.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

You can map it but the “www” will simply redirect to the same site without it.

The software will strip out the www. for your convenience, and http://www.collegecourtreport.com/ will always redirect to http://collegecourtreport.com

www is an old protocol from back when everything was under separate server hardware. www (www.example.com) was the web server, mail (mail.example.com) was the mail server, ftp (ftp.example.com) was the FTP server, print (print.example.com) was the print server, etc. These days, everything is run under the web server, making www. redundant and a waste of four characters.

re: mapping to an existing domain from a .wordpress.com blog
Please read this first Important Notes Before Upgrading http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/#important-notes-before-upgrading

WordPress.com does not accept domain transfers but mapping an existing domain is possible. Domain mapping of an existing domain URL that you already own and purchased elsewhere is not done free of charge. You will have to renew the domain name purchase where you made it and the domain mapping purchase here every year.

Mapping an existing domain costs $13. annually and a domain name purchase and domain mapping are included in the Premium ujpgrade bundle.

In order to map to a domain one must have an underlying .wordpress.com sub-domain blog to map from and it does not matter what that underlying .wordpress.com URL is. It does not have to match the domain URL.

If you have registered a .wordpress.com blog you log in as Admin under the exact same username account that registered the WordPress.COM blog, and as you own a domain URL already, you can see here for mapping an existing domain. http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/

It can take between 24 – 72 hours for domain name propagation to take place throughout the internet. You can view the DNS changes here > http://www.whatsmydns.net/ What’s important during that stage is to be patient.

    Thank you for the assistance!

When I click on “Map an Existing Domain”, it doesn’t prompt me to pay anything. However, it says renew on May 5th…does that mean anything at all?

    @collegecourtreport

Your domain has been successfully added to your WordPress.com site, but you have not yet updated the domain’s name servers:

    https://en.support.wordpress.com/domain-helper/?host=collegecourtreport.com

At present, you’re enrolled in the WordPress.com Premium Plan Trial, which will automatically be charged to your payment method on May 7, 2015.

If you no longer require the WordPress.com Premium Plan, let me know, and I will remove it. Separately, I can send a payment link for the Domain Mapping Upgrade, as well.
