It says my API key is invalid but I checked and it is correct

Akismet is saying that there is something wrong with my API key. I checked it (even re-entered it) on wordpress.com and it is correct. This starte happening this week (after over a year of flawless use. Anyone know what is happening? Thanks –> Dirk

Here’s the standard reply.
Your key will be correct.
The error message is because Akismet cannot access the Akismet server. The problem is one of these things:
– either Akismet is being denied access to the internet if you are hosted locally behind a firewall,
or
– the server you are on lacks the ‘fopen’ function which Akismet needs.
or
– your host might need to know that the default-installed SELinux security precautions (on Fedora4) causes this problem. With SELinux disabled, it works.
or
– ask your host if they mod_chroot enabled. If they do, that is what has caused Akismet not to work. They will be able to advise on what they can do for you.
Do talk to your host and see if there is anyway they can help – and do ask them what changed in their server upgrade which they obviously did. That’s what stopped it.

For future reference, should Akismet support threads be referred to their contact form, our contact form, modlooked, or should we just copy/paste that reply?

It’s better if they come through the Akismet form as we can better see how often this happens – it’s pretty rare – but it’s also easier to have the to-fro by email to try and find the cause.
So I suppose the above could be copied with a “If this does not work contact Akismet” and from there we can take it further hopefully.
But any method you mention is good by me – if people need the answer I’ll do my best to get it.

Sorry to continue this, since I guess it’s off topic, but I had to ask.

As in
allow_url_fopen? Because that’s pretty common to have shut off on servers these days since it’s like a super huge security risk. -

This the message that I receive
The key you entered could not be verified because a connection to akismet.com could not be established. Please check your server configuration.
Can some one tell me whats happening and what could I do…. to solve the problem
