It Shouldn't Be this hard

All I want is a theme that supports the current accessibility standards, has a small space for a header image, decent tablet and mobile support with a right-hand sidebar.

More than 3/4 of the blogs in my blogs in my blogroll fit that description (possibly minus the mobile-friendly version) Or they have LH sidebars or sidebars on both sides. It doesn’t seem like it should be that much of a stretch goal for the most popular blog-building software on the planet.

Twenty Sixteen (almost the only theme that fits that list of requirements) blocks out bold-text from block-quotes. Which is a deal-breaker for me.

Now some authors use bold text to highlight their ideas, and I have been know to use bold text to highlight portions of a quote that I found particularly important. (I always note when the emphasis is mine.)

Twenty Seventeen would work, except the image space reserved is way too big, so I would have to dump my header image. Not the end of the world, but why??? I suppose I could pay for the privilege of accessing the CSS, and reducing the image size, but I refuse to sign up for a monthly or yearly fee for the purpose of making a one-time-edit.

Many of the themes do everything I want except support the accessibility guidelines regarding links in blocks of text. I can only assume that the accessibility guidelines are new. (This includes most of the premium themes.)

Twenty Nineteen has no sidebar. (Apparently in the brave new world of Gutenberg I won’t need a blogroll. Or something)

And so I will give up and go back to the theme that works for me even though it isn’t accessible. Maybe by the time Gutenberg is accessible, more of the themes will be as well.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi –

Thanks for writing to us. I wanted to make sure you’ve seen this search filter that’s available on our theme showcase.
