Italicised text has changed font without warning, why?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi,

As stated above, the italicised text I use for article introductions has remained the same as the main body… but out of the blue tonight, it’s changed font on all of my articles and thus increased the length of my introductions by squeezing out the words in a different manner.

How did this come to be, and where can I change it? I’m using the classic editor and the text looks normal on my end:

But then different on the homepage…

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi there –

the italicised text I use for article introductions has remained the same as the main body

As you see it now, did both the bold italicized text and the main body text change? Or is it only the bold italicized text?

I noticed moandsports.com is using the Sela theme, which is a retired theme. I recommend reviewing this guide to see what it means when a theme is retired and what to do about it: https://wordpress.com/support/themes/retired-themes/

As the guide says our support will be limited with the retired theme. Are you open to the option of switching to a new theme; especially if we can help you find a good alternative?

    Hi Dean,

The main body text hasn’t changed, only the bold italicized text – but it’s still showing me what it would look like before this sudden font change.

I didn’t know the Sela theme had been retired, but all I want is for the font to change back to the existing style. Can you help me with this?

How it looks while editing the post:

    How it looks when published:

Since you’re composing in the Classic Block, it doesn’t reflect your site’s font and only shows you the italicized version of your system font. For example, the text in the editor looks like this for me (which is a serif font):

What is showing on the front end is the font for the theme which is Sans Source Pro italicized. Additionally, this theme has not had any updates since was retired in August 2019, so it’s likely due to changes in the WordPress software and editor, which we don’t control.

You do have the option to upgrade to a Premium plan or above to gain access to the CSS editor, which would give you more granular control over the look of the front end of your site.

I hope that clarifies things! Let us know if you have any questions.

Appreciate you letting me know how it looks on your end by comparison, if I change theme will it revert back to the same font as my main body text? That’s the main thing I’m concerned about.

    Thanks

Changing themes can change the font (if the new theme uses a different font), but it should retain any italics or bold formatting made in the post editor.

Also note that if you do switch to a new theme, you would not be able to go back to the Sela theme that you’re using now since the theme is retired.

    I hope that helps!

Ok, so what free themes can I choose instead which will allow me to retain italics/bold formatting for my article introductions in the post editor? I like and have used the Sela theme a while now, shouldn’t need to change it just to revert back to what was working the whole time.

  • Any theme will let you retain the italics and bold for your introductions! However with non-retired themes, the classic editor will typically show text in your computer’s default font (even if the published version uses a serif font).

It could be worth giving Dara a go – it’s quite similar in appearance to Sela:
    https://wordpress.com/theme/dara

Before activating Dara, you can preview it on your blog so you can decide whether you like how it looks in the live view; if you click on the Dara demo (right side of the above-linked theme page), it’ll open up a pop-up where you can choose to try and customize Dara on your blog.

So, I’ve changed to Dara – quite similar in appearance to Sela, but the initial issue I had still remains. All the fonts are different now: the introductory paragraph, picture captions, article body text. The text is squeezed even further out and sentences look out of place on the website.

I’ve always composed articles in the classic block, why should I be punished for not wanting to start editing articles in a clunky block editor? Can someone please help me fix this?

  • As mentioned before, non-retired themes like Dara use your computer’s default font for the editor. You can of course bold and italicize the text, but whether or not it shows as serif in the editor will always depend on whether your own computer’s default font is serif or not.

It seems like your window is quite zoomed out? Here’s how it appears for me if I check “as you” now:

On your site, this is how the post appears for me – is it different for you?

  • Unknown's avatar

Yeah, my window is zoomed out – 67% – but it’s always been like this, makes things easier to see and edit from a distance, plus the issue wasn’t there before.

This is how it looks on the site. Caption font is italicised (why?) and not tight to the picture, while the “leave a comment” line at the bottom remains, both of these things weren’t there on my Sela theme.

I checked, my computer’s default font was Segoe U1 and that is an extended version of sans-serif, so there’s no reason why this should be the case.

I’ve just changed it to MS Reference Sans Serif and it looks like this. What Windows font does it need to be, allowing me a return to how it was before – the very first screenshot?

  • Thanks for these screenshots and for checking your fonts and whatnot. I think we may have spotted the cause, and we’ll be working to get it sorted.

  • Unknown's avatar

It’s been two weeks since the last message in this thread identifying the cause, so any update on when this will be rectified?

  • Hey there,

Thanks for reaching back out. This is something we’re still looking into.

Yeah, my window is zoomed out – 67%

The zooming in the browser may have an effect – does changing this, have an effect? It doesn’t look like the text spacing is the issue as it seems it’s too subtle to determine eitherway.

    Many thanks in advance.

  • Unknown's avatar

No, changing the browser zooming has no effect. However since my last message in this thread, the font in my classic editor has again changed from this (pic 1) to pic 2…

There was never any issue with zoom, font or otherwise before I began this thread. It all happened suddenly, and hasn’t gone back since – which makes editing much more difficult as sentence structure and paragraph length is different on the website than what it appears to me on the back end.

  • Hi there,

However since my last message in this thread, the font in my classic editor has again changed from this (pic 1) to pic 2…

Yes, one of the issues addressed in the update was to prevent the font from defaulting to sans-serif, which shouldn’t have been happening. Hope that helps.

Any update on this issue being resolved? Still waiting for a fix.

    Hi there,

We still don’t have an update, unfortunately. But we’re keeping an eye on this and will let you know here as soon as we have an update to share. I appreciate your patience in the meantime.

    Regards
