re: front page error message
Nothing Found
It seems we can’t find what you’re looking for. Perhaps searching can help.By default the front page of the blog is the only page that will display all published posts on it. As soon as you publish a post not a page the error message will be gone. http://en.support.wordpress.com/post-vs-page/

Every day we get new people who do not understand that a blog is a website posting here. This is all semantics and blog structure.
A blog is a post based website designed for interactive communication. As the posts are frequently updated and appear on the front page of the site it’s very attractive to search engines.
What most people call a website is merely a page based site that functions as a one way noticeboard. As the structure is page based and as pages are for static content that rarely changes, and as pages do not have RSS feeds it is not as attractive to search engines as a post based blog structured site is.
Any WordPress blog can be restructured from being post based to being page based – no upgrade required. For greater clarity read > http://en.support.wordpress.com/using-wordpress-to-create-a-website/ and http://onecoolsitebloggingtips.com/2013/07/25/create-a-wordpress-website-step-by-step/

Thank you, your response is concise, but still confusing to me, since this is new, and the terminology you have used is unfamiliar. I am going to look at the tutorials. I don’t know the difference between a post based websites and a page based site. I am trying to create a website for a class assignment, for which I must create details for several different schools…
-
Well…I am attempting to describe several schools, each one on a separate page of the website I hope to create…help?
-
I have tried doing so, but they aren’t easy to follow. There are a lot of examples regarding website names, for example, but the array of templates, while seeming to offer choices I could use, seem to be links to the work other people have created. It’s so confusing. If I were capable of understanding how to use the site, I know I could help the purveyors of the site present something more comprehensible to beginners!

Simply start publishing posts and know that themes are just skins that can be easily changed. Don’t waste any time on fiddling with themes and widgets now. Publish posts.

To timethief…thank you, I appreciate your willingness to help, but the suggestions lead in circles. I am ready to throw in the towel!
