I’ve outgrown our free wordpress.com, what next? A paid for wordpress.com plan or wordpress.orgsite

  I maintain a simple wordpress web site and a blog (swinburnes.wordpress.com) that I use to document our adventures on our sailing yacht. Blogs are read by perhaps 50 or so people (half registered via WordPress and the rest accessing when I publicise posts via Facebook). I am at the 3Gb space limit for the free site so either need to upgrade my WordPress.com hosting or move to, say, Bluehosts. Advice please.

  Hi there,

  If you just need more space, upgrading your WordPress.com plan is the simplest. And we actually have a sale on all our plans right now – see the top of the page here in the forum.

  Moving to another host is also an option, but a hosting plan with the same level of security, spam protection, automatic software updates, unlimited memory and bandwidth, and support provided even on a free WordPress.com site is likely to cost much more than even our Premium Plan, possibly more than our Business Plan.

  You might be able to get cheaper hosting elsewhere with more media storage, but you’ll lose a significant amount of services that we provide to all sites which are typically included only in higher-end hosting plans elsewhere.

  So I’d recommend do your research – look at hosting plans at other providers, and what those plans offer in terms of the features I mentioned above. You might not care about all those things, in which case you might be happy with a hosting plan else where that does not include all of them.

  But if you’d prefer to keep things simple, I’d recommend sticking with us.

  Also worth noting, I see you’ve been uploading some pretty high-res images to your site. If you resize images to their actual display size before you upload them, and use some optimization tools to further trim down the file size first, you can easily make the 3GB extra storage included in Personal last ten times as long as the 3GB free storage you’ve exhausted by now.
