Hi. Since creating my WordPress page I’ve received a lot of spam emails to do with websites. What is going on?! This is really not good.

Also please share the username or blog addresses from these emails.

I’m tagging “modlook” as well to get a staff’s attention.

  • Hi there,

Since this account was created two days ago our system has sent you four emails – the activate email for your account, a welcome email, and two emails about setting up your site. And then we’ve sent you email notifications regarding to the two forum threads you’ve created.

We have not sent any other emails, so whatever emails you are getting, they are not coming from us.

If you can give me a couple FROM addresses where those emails are coming from, and their subject lines, then I might be able to give you more information, but we have no control over emails other services or sites not hosted on WordPress.com might send you.

  • I see in your other thread at https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/linking-domain-to-wordpress-1 you mention wanting to connect a domain. What is that domain? When you registered it, did you opt in for the private registration service offered by your domain provider? If you didn’t, then that’s most likely where these people got your email address – from your domain contact details which appear in the public Whois database.

I need someone to contact directly. I’ve received over 200 emails today saying that I’ve signed up to follow all types of various blogs. How do I shut this down?!

  • @jcernosek

The only email we’ve sent you in the past 48 hours is the one confirming your recent email change. We haven’t sent you any others. We also haven’t sent you emails to the old Yahoo address either, except for the address change notification, the transcript of the live chat you had with us right after posting to this thread, and an email to access your offline subscription settings.

As I indicated above, we’d need the FROM addresses and subject lines for a few emails to check, but I’m going to guess these are coming from self-hosted WordPress websites where a bot is using your email to create fake accounts on those sites. We can’t do anything about that, as we don’t control those sites.

Look at the addresses the emails are coming from. If they’re from wordpress@ addresses with a random domain after the @, they’re not from us. Emails from us will only ever come from a @wordpress.com address. The domain after the @ tells you where an email originates, not the text before the @.
