    Hi stefanescreet!

You can convert your site to a website, no problem. Add any pages you need. You can place links to your pages from a static home page, the widget areas or on a custom menu.

A custom menu can include Pages, Links, Category, Tag and Post items.

    • Page – Adds a page from your site
    • Link – Add a custom URL to another site
    • Category – Show a feed of blog posts from a given category
    • Tag – Show a feed of blog posts from a given tag
    • Post – link directly to a blog post on your site

    Menus

You can still set up blog post area — more about that on the support document about setting up a static “home” page.

    Set the Homepage

    Thanks daschultemn
Just spotted that you have helped someone else with this.
I have to confess I’m a bit confused about the difference between ‘blog’ and ‘website’. I guess it’s simply the use of it?
The static home page makes it feel like a website.
(can you tell I’m new to all this?!!)

Exactly. Your site is definitely what you make it and don’t worry, everyone comes with different levels of experience.

Using a static front page will naturally make it feel less like a blog and more like a traditional website. I’m sure there are a bunch of opinions on it, but I think the main difference between a blog and a website is the level of interactivity between you and the reader.

May I also add something to this thread?

    A blog is a website.

A blog is a post based website designed for interactive communication. As the posts are frequently updated and appear on the front page of the site it’s very attractive to search engines.

What most people call a website is merely a page based site that functions as a one way noticeboard. As the structure is page based and as pages are for static content that rarely changes, and as pages do not have RSS feeds, and as others do not backlink to pages, it is not as attractive to search engines as a post based blog structured site is.

Any WordPress blog can be restructured from being post based to being page based – no upgrade required. For greater clarity read > http://en.support.wordpress.com/using-wordpress-to-create-a-website/

    Thank you timethief.
That’s a clear and kind explanation.
I’m sensing this is probably a generational thing and that our kids are effortless with all this in the way we were with VCRs!
