I've updated my domain, do I still have to pay for the old one?
-
This is probably a stupid question, so apologies in advance if the answer is painfully obvious.
Months ago we paid the $18.00 for the domain thetwinfactor.com as opposed to thetwinfactor.wordpress.com. We recently paid $25.00 to change our domain to twinsanity.co. My question is: will we still have to pay $18.00 yearly for thetwinfactor.com even though that’s no longer our primary domain, or will we just have to pay for the new $25 domain?

Hi there,
Each of those domains are separate, so if you want to keep ownership of both of them you’ll need to pay to renew both domains. As long as you own both domains, visitors can use either one to reach your site. (The primary domain is just the one that shows in the address bar once you get to the site, but any non-primary domains will keep working.)
If you don’t need ownership of the other domain thetwinfactor.com at all, you don’t need to renew it — you can just renew twinsanity.co and use that as the only domain for your site. Once thetwinfactor.com expires, though, it won’t work any longer (so anyone trying to reach your site using that domain will get an error).
Please let me know if you have any other questions about that. :)

Thanks. :) That’s just what I wanted to know. We’ll let thetwinfactor.com stick around long enough for our readers to familiarize themselves with the new URL, then just let it expire in December, so (hopefully) by then everyone will already be using twinsanity.co as the default. I was worried we’d be fined or penalized if we didn’t renew the old domain.

That sounds like a great plan! You definitely won’t be penalized if you don’t renew the old domain — if you have any trouble with that old domain after it expires, you can also contact us for more help with it. :)

Thanks again! Just one more question: will I be notified when it’s time to renew my domain? If so, how? Via email or something? I can always just mark the date on my calendar otherwise. :)
-
Yep! We’ll send you email reminders when your domain’s renewal date is getting close. (Those go out to the email address in the account settings for the account that was used to buy the domain.)
Your domain twinsanity.co is also set to auto renew, so we’ll try to automatically renew the domain for you about a month before it expires. You’ll also get an email reminder about that, and you can turn auto renew on and off on your My Upgrades page if you want.
Let me know if I can help with anything else!

Sometimes the renewal notices get lost for a variety of reasons, so best to also note on your calendar to renew the upgrade, do it a few weeks before it expires, that way if something goes wrong (credit card problems, Admin on vacation etc.) there is time to fix the issue so there is no gap in the renewal
