Java Script Widgets
-
I am creating a new blog. I want to include a gadget from my google reader, my “shared items” RSS.
The problem is that the gadget is in Java script.
I know that the free version of Word Press does not allow Java script for security reasons.
What do I need to purchase to ensure I can run the java script code?
Are there any easy work arounds (i.e. ways to convert the java code to something usable)?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

There is no upgrade you can purchase to allow javascript at WordPress.com. And without more details about the code or what it does, we cannot suggest workarounds.

You can add what I would call buttons. You might not be able to add the buttons you have in mind, though. Please give us a link to both your own blog and an example of some of those buttons.
Some buttons have javascript. Most do not. There’s no need for it and usually there’s a workaround but we need to see what the specific button is meant to do
-
Buttons that would lead to another blog. My blog address is: http://kaholly.wordpress.com. An example of a button I would add is: <img border=”0″ alt=”The Muddy Moose” src=”http://i731.photobucket.com/albums/ww318
Is this what you are asking for?

Here’s another “button” I would like to display on my page. For The Festival of Trees: <img src=”http://festivalofthetrees.files.wordpress.com/2008/01/trees_badge.gif” border=”0″ alt=”Festival of the Trees” />
-
Oops, the Festival of Trees button worked. Hmmmmmmmmm.mmmm.mm. So, my next question would be, do I have a choice of where it is displayed or does it just use up the the next available space in line?

kaholly,
It looks like both of your links (buttons) will work. Just put them into text widgets.
Once widgets are in your sidebar, you can drag them up or down into the order you want. -

Hi
I would like to add a de.li.cious badge to my blog –
http://danelooking4job.wordpress.com/<script type=”text/javascript” src=”http://feeds.delicious.com/v2/js/networkbadge/stellalicious?showadd&icon=m&name&itemcount&nwcount&fancount”></script>
Is there a way around this?

What is its function? I see you have a link to your delicious bookmarks but you’re not using the widget:

What is the reason that we can’t have javascript widgets? I read about ‘security reasons’. And I still don’t understand what these security reasons are. How can other blogs run so smoothly with javascrpit then? It seriously enhances your blog.
I think we should all make a push to allow javascript widgets.
on http://www.widgetbox.com/tag/sports. There is an option for wordpress blogs. And it says these widgets will work if you are running wordpress (through wordpress.org) on your own site.
Can anyone please explain that?
Thanks. -
Facebook and a number other services have been brought down by bad script that was installed by users. WordPress is very security conscious and as such simply don’t allow it.
I also know of a couple bloggers users on another platform that were suspended for putting in bad javascript and messing things up over there. As far as I know, they still have not gotten their blogs back.

Thanks for the info.
Do you know much about the wordpress.org option? From what I gather, that allows javascript. -
You can do pretty much anything you want to with a self-hosted blog.
You will have to register and pay for a domain name if you don’t have one already, and then hire a web host, download and install the software from wordpress.ORG onto the host and configure it all. You will be responsible for all uploads and upgrades, and for all backups, maintenance and troubleshooting. If something goes wrong, you have to fix it. If you use some bad javascript or flash and it takes your blog down, you have to deal with the aftermath. If it takes down the web host’s server, your account may be terminated and I’ve even see a few that say they will send you a bill if you were the reason for the server crash (check the terms of service very carefully).
Expect the average cost including domain registration and web hosting to cost you anywhere from $10 per month to $100 per month depending on bandwidth and storage requirements. If you have a post or two that get Digg’d, you can run out of bandwidth long before the end of the month and then you will have to pay for more or your blog will be shut down until the end of the month.
