Jetpack Custom Message Does not appear in twitter
-
Second time seeking help. My wordpress blog is set to share posts to Twitter. When it does, it does not include the Custom Message.
This has nothing to do with the image or url taking up spaces in the message. There are plenty of characters left to display the message. Twitter shows the title of the post.
Does this feature just not work? -
Hi there, what is the WPcom site address and twitter account involved?
If you are referring to a site using the open source WP software with the jetpack plugin installed, you can also seek help directly with jetpack at their forum at https://wordpress.org/support/plugin/jetpack If you don’t have a username on the ORG forums, you can register one on that page.

The site address is https://joeleturner.wordpress.com/. the twitter account is @JoelETurner1. I deleted the twitter post in question – I could repost if it will help diagnosis
I do also have the question into Jetpack support, thanks for suggesting. -
Hi again, if the site is hosted here on WordPress.com this is the correct place for support. I’ve flagged this thread for Staff attention and assistance.

Hi,
I deleted the twitter post in question – I could repost if it will help diagnosis
Would you be willing to keep the connection as is, then update us here after your next post?
What’s showing up instead of the custom message?
-
Hello
I just copied the post I was having problems with and reposted the copy. It is the most recent post on my site.
The custom message was: Every modern home needs a sound effects record….right?
The message on Twitter is: the title of the post (The Record I Couldn’t bring myself to give away); followed by the URL for the post; followed by the first image in the post.

Hi again, just adding the links
post https://joeleturner.wordpress.com/2020/01/10/the-record-i-couldnt-bring-myself-to-give-away/

Edited to add another WPcom user seems to have a similar issue at https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/why-is-my-social-media-messages-not-publishing/

Thanks. I see this one Twitter twice:
https://twitter.com/JoelETurner1/status/1215697809724399616 — just the title and an imageWas that automatically sent? And, did you have the post excerpt in place beforehand? Also, I’m noticing you didn’t pick a featured image; was that intentional?
Here’s the other tweet:
https://twitter.com/JoelETurner1/status/1216774076955533314 — a preview with this text above it: “My review of Live Mechanical Sound Effects LP – updated with excerpts from the most excellent liner notes!”
At Twitter’s card validator I see the same preview:
https://cards-dev.twitter.com/validatorDid you send the second tweet manually? Did you make any changes to the post in between initial publication and this second tweet?
-
The first tweet you mentioned was posted automatically.Yes, a post excerpt was in place when this was automatically posted.
I believe I did not have a featured image selected then. I was focused on just the message. However, I’ve noted that an image does show up in the card when you put the url in. However, I don’t believe this is the image that shows up in Twitter. I believe that Twitter selects the first image if no featured image is selected. (But I’m done testing now – too many duplicate tweets clogging my twitter feed). The second post was done manually in twitter. I pasted in the URL below text that I typed in. I believe I had not updated the featured image yet when I posted the tweet. Subsequently I updated the featured image to be the front cover of the lp.
-
Subsequently I updated the featured image to be the front cover of the lp.
Is this still done? Right now the image does not seem to be the front cover.
Next time you post, will you, if possible:
– Set the featured image and message prior to publishing
– Allow the tweet to go through
– Don’t change the featured image / message after publishingThe changes after publishing are making things a bit trickier to troubleshoot.
We’ll also be troubleshooting on our end.
-
And, noting too, no need to copy / paste a post or do test posts. Just let us know next time you write a normal post, and try not to change any publicize / featured image / excerpt settings after publishing.
-
The picture in twitter is indeed the front cover; but that is a post that I manually created. When I paste the URL into twitter it brings up the card, as the validator would show it, which shows the featured image; the title; and the excerpt.
Every time I have generated a tweet automatically over the last four days from my wordpress site, what appears is the post title, the url and an image, which I believe is selected by wordpress or twitter.
If you are ready to look at this now, I will do a test tweet with two images (one being selected for featured image; excerpt text and custom text (different from each other and different from the title.
I am not going to use the automatic posting feature for regular posts until I know that it works properly, so I do want to test.
-
@joeleturner we check back here for replies periodically, so it wouldn’t be ideal for something you want to post then have checked immediately.
If you’d like, we’ll just try to duplicate on our end. I’ve got my site set up with my real Twitter account too, so I understand not wanting to put out a bunch of test tweets.
-
Thanks very much. If you can try that’s great. When I put another post up that is linked to Twitter, I’ll let you know.
-
Thank you. We’ll keep this open; I’m sure one of us will be posting in the next few days.
-
Just letting you know I tested this this morning.
I set an excerpt, and I set a featured image. I did not set a separate social media message.
The auto-tweet went out with just the title, link, and featured image.
I tried tweeting again (just a test tweet) and this time I saw the title, excerpt, and featured image.
I’m going to try again next time I write anything to see what happens if I set the social media message separately, under the Jetpack icon.
Will you try the same thing on your end?
