Jetpack error retrieving site settings – no update for followers

  keep getting ‘there was an error retrieving your site settings. Make sure your Jetpack is up to date’
  My Jetpack is up to date and my followers do not receive updates.

  the blog I need help with is obviously not a wordpress.com blog but a self hosted blog with the jetpack plugin.
