Jetpack Portfolios on WordPress.org

I would like to begin developing Jetpack portfolios on a WordPress.org site. I am trying to find appropriate tutorials to follow but what I am finding seems more applicable to WordPress.com sites.

The steps to follow seem obtuse to me and playing around with it in the dashboard is not getting me the kind of results I expect.

I am thinking along the lines of a Pinterest display with sub-directories listed in the menu near the top. Each thumbnail on the page is a link to an item. So for instance they have Knitting Projects as a page and a menu on this main page links to different portfolio pages like Baby Blankets, Knit Patterns etc.

At the least I am hoping for a main menu page (titled with something like “links to information” with several pages available in my theme’s sub menu. Each subpage would be titled something different: “widget links”, “pdf reports”, “protocol docs” etc.

On each portfolio page these various links, pdf’s or docs would be displayed as thumbnails with an image representing the link, pdf or doc. Clicking on them would open the link, pdf or doc.

I’ve simplified this for understanding but my initial efforts have ended up with one screen snip on a page several times, the url link doesn’t work and just opens the .jpg screen snip.

I’m willing to do some work to figure this out, but I need the right references. Searching this forum brought up one topic that really doesn’t apply. The only other resource I can locate is this:

    Thanks for any help,
