Jetpack Publicizes edits of already published, imported WP posts
-
Hi folks. I have recently been experiencing what I believe to be a similar issue as this 2012 WP post ( https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/why-does-wp-publicize-edits-on-old-posts?replies=21 )
The facts as I see them.
I used to have a self-hosted blog, but earlier this year, we imported our site to wordpress.com. As far as I know, we had not been using the Publicize feature prior to our migration (or, if we had, it would not have been with the same Jetpack account information, if that makes sense). About 1 hour ago, one of our bloggers went through some posts that he had published before the migration and made some edits.
As he made the edits, Jetpack’s Publicize feature published each blog post to our Facebook page as if they were new posts.
Is this intended behavior? If not, what information can we provide to help WordPress prevent this from happening in the future. If it is, is there some option so that we can turn that off?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there,
I checked the forum thread you mentioned. I assume your posts are getting published as they weren’t published before through Publicize. Try editing published posts and see if they are getting published again. This will tell you if the problem is with all posts or just the posts that weren’t published by Publicize.
One work around you can opt for temporarily is that you can turn off Publicize and then publish edited posts.
Also, I’d suggest you to contact Jetpack Support Team as they can help you better with this.

re: Jetpack support
Some Jetpack solutions are here http://jetpack.me/support/
Others are in the Jetpack support forum at WordPress.org
http://wordpress.org/support/plugin/jetpack
However, if you can’t find help at either one then you can file a Jetpack support ticket here > http://en.support.wordpress.com/contact/?jetpack=needs-serviceThe wordpress.ORG support forum is at http://wordpress.org/support. The wordpress.ORG login link is here https://login.wordpress.org/ If you do not have an account yet then click Create an account https://login.wordpress.org/register/ and if you have lost an account password click Lost password? https://login.wordpress.org/lostpassword/
WordPress.org support docs are at https://codex.wordpress.org/Main_Page
See also https://apps.wordpress.org/support/ for app support. -
Editing a post that was previously publicized does not republicize it. This issue only occurs (in my investigation) for posts that were previously published and imported to wp.com (and thus had not originally been publicized.)
I have advised the blogger who is editing posts to turn off Publicize for those posts before saving.
I will also check with the jetpack specific support.
Would it be appropriate to post on the WordPress.ORG forums when we have been migrated to WordPress.COM for several months now?

No. I’m sorry and apologize. I will I will type modlook into the sidebar tags on this thread for a Staff follow-up. How do I get a Moderator/Staff reply for my question? https://en.support.wordpress.com/getting-help-in-the-forums/#how-do-i-get-a-moderatorstaff-reply-for-my-question Also subscribe to this thread so you are notified when they respond and be patient while waiting. @sa40test
Like I thought the ones not Publicized are getting Publicized after editing. As @timethief has added modlook tag, we’ll soon hear from staff.
Also, if you contact Jetpack support and get an answer to this, do post it here. I am curious to know if this behaviour is expected or what is the solution to it. -
Hi @sa40test, I’ve actually seen that myself when I imported a site from .org. We now handle imports better and (during the import) mark old posts as previously published so that won’t happen. Unfortunately we don’t have a simple way to mark old posts as previously published when we aren’t importing.
Your best bet for now may be to ask authors to be aware of that and uncheck the publicize box.

Jetpack support essentially came back with the same answer as @supernovia:
From what you describe, it seems that the internal flag for these posts were set to ‘not yet publicized’ during the export/import process when you switched to WordPress.com, and then when they were edited, that flag was triggered and they were Publicized to your connected sites.
Since this isn’t affecting your new posts, this is just a workflow issue you’ll need to have your editors remember when editing older posts. If they uncheck any Publicize options, in the ‘Edit’ link near the ‘Update’ button, that will prevent the posts from being automatically shared when editing older posts.
Let me know if we can help further.

Yeah, if we had an interface to bulk-mark-as-published-already, we would do that for you. Sorry we can’t do more in this case.
